Has this ever been a thing, that Chinese trainees are considered more talented than Korean ones??

What gave cause to that thought?

It's the first time that I hear of it.

It was the youth with youth and Chuang Chinese idol survival show series where kpoppies declared cpop idols/trainees were better than their Korean counterparts in everything when we know that’s false on average by simply looking at China’s domestic idols lol. They have the population but not the infrastructure in place.

Chinese survival shows had people believing this at one point lol. Comment section was filled with Korean idol bashing left and right.

I think when people first saw these shows "YWY" and "Chuang" they were a bit shocked at the production, talent and visual levels. They expected something far below Korean levels but when they were not then they over compensated in the other direction.

Chinese trainees won't be better in KPOP idol industry standards especially in dance.

That said, there were some things that Chinese trainees definitely better at.

Formally trained musicians who play instruments -- you won't find a functioning rock band at a Korean survival:

Power vocals -- far more top level vocals in the Chinese shows, they just can't sing as well while dancing at the same time:

The visuals -- taller girls and more diverse ones too. Overall visual level is a bit higher to be perfectly honest. Xiaoting was voted visual center in GP999 but she was completely overshadowed by the visuals of girls like Yiyang and Zhenyu at Chuang 2020.

Korean trainees are better at idol style dance and singing during dance. The standard is set by KPOP so of course.

That said, even in idol dance the best Chinese ones are not that far off and some of them (not all) might match the best on Korean shows:
