are variety shows still important for idols?

  • groups like snsd and suju had great variety skills but I haven’t really seen any 4th gen groups with like good variety skills (not counting their own reality shows). I also don’t really know any individual 4th gen idols who are good at variety like idols such as Mijoo and Sungjae.

Do you think these skills are still important for a following? I feel like variety is still insanely important for gp recognition, hence why 4th gen idols aren’t as popular with gp as previous gens. Also we have to keep in mind that these skills get developed over time, but most 4th gen idols don’t seem to have that natural variety spark.

Also who are some 4th gen idols who genuinely have excelled on variety shows?

  • I think since 4th gen just started we don't know yet. plus they're rookies so they might not be comfortable yet in variety.

I think variety is important to make a group well known the Korean gp ---unless they're just so big it doesn't matter.

like Hwasa became popular as well as Jessi mainly because of variety..so if the 4th gen can do it well they can rlly make a killing.

still, groups can have a good fanbase without variety so it's not required.

  • Yuqi does a lot of variety shows. She even had her own, Learn Way. Her sister, Yena, also does a lot too.

  • I feel like televised variety shows have turned away from idols in the last few years. Like you'll still see a 3rd/4th gen idol tossed into a variety show alongside some veteran entertainers, but that's about it. It sucks for their public recognition, but at the same time... I'm fine with it.

Internet based shows like MMTG are much looser and seem like more fun for the idols than your traditional Korean variety show. Plus groups can opt to make their own curated content for YouTube which usually ends up being better quality.

Shows like Going Seventeen have built up a great working relationship between the crew and the group. There's a level of trust between the two which imo allows them to enjoy themselves more. You can definitely see the difference in the more introverted members coming out of their shells over the course of the series because they're more comfortable. That trust also lets the idols do things that are they are more interested in doing like Johnny's Communication Center which is literally just a sporadic series where Johnny from NCT does something new or goes somewhere.

  • Blame the company 4th gen are so restricted then can’t even hang out with others idols, they have barely any freedom that’s why they are so awkward in front of a camera

Especially watching joy on showterview, her staff were taking notes and joy is a well established idol since 2014, so it’s probably even more monitored for 4th gen idols, who have more of a ‘perfect’ image to uphold.

    Yena from izone

    Yuqi from Gidle

    Yuna from Itzy

Omg, I totally forgot about Yena, imo she’s easily the strongest 4th gen variety idol. Yuqi is also great but I feel like she shines more on Chinese variety shows. Yuna has potential too, I can see her being a Sooyoung type character in the future
