Can't speak for others, but in my country SNSD-Gee and SJ-Sorry Sorry was the one who open the Kpop gate. Them along with drama like 'Full House' and 'Boys Over Flowers' was the one who truly started Hallyu Wave in my country. I don't even think TVXQ was popular among Kpop fans here tbh.

He has huge sm following and his drama topped netflix worldwide and made profit , even though it didn't work in korea.
His global fame is that he is headlining apple+ 112 billion won drama and earning a record salary of billion won per episode

Look at his insta followers and before china ban, he was signing 2 million usd contracts in china and had double digits cf there. And more he runs his own agency with his sister, so profit he keep! His endorsements in korea pay him top dollar, because they target other asian countries too.

But to be fair, SNSD wasnt really popular globally.
They were super popular in SEA + Japan and China, on the western part, they didnt make much impact.
But of course the kpop niche fans would know SNSD for sure. They were the top GG at that time
