I've had a standing kill order on that font for forever. It's not the font though really. It's just a font. It's the overuse added on to its inappropriate application in many situations.
Want to look like you didn't want to use the standard Times New Roman, but didn't know what the hell you were doing and couldn't be bothered to consult someone that did (for a myriad of reasons)?
Use Comic Sans MS.

I use Mystic which uses Adobe Sen. I don't really like any of the options but they are standard web fonts. My go-tos when I am designing differ, but for a font where I'm looking for...
Bold/Black version: Bebas Neue
Elegant Serif: Didot
Standard Body Font: Avenir
Tiny Font: Silkscreen
I try those first for feel, but I'll use other fonts as well ...
