This Mamamoo song featured in Wednesday Season 2 is a bop!

  • The moment I heard this song, which only plays briefly in the first episode of Wednesday season 2, it was clearly K-pop so I had to Shazam it. I definitely did not expect it to be a random mamamoo song but this has been my ear worm for the past few days. The MV is also amazing. Mamamoo really does have some hidden gems

Ewww, take David out of the list.

THIS is why you needed to listen to more Mamamoo songs. Um Oh Ah Yeah is quite literally the song that changed the course of their careers.

Take a moment to join me 10 years ago in the summer of 2015. Mamamoo had completed an admirable rookie year, but they were just tredding water to stay afloat in the competitive girl group landscape and had failed to make any big waves yet. All the other established girl groups are releasing summer songs, from SNSD to Sistar to AOA, to name a few. And then there was Mamamoo with UOAY.

Many people thought MMM would be buried, but instead UOAY rose and became their first top 5 hit and the most impactful song of their careers! After UOAY, Mamamoo was everywhere and went on an unbelievable run.

And it's also just a fantastic song. Up until that point, all their title tracks had an old school, jazzy and retro vibe to them, eschewing the colorful and vibrant for a black and white aesthetic you would expect from a noir film. UOAY changed all that, and people could no longer accuse MMM of "looking old" despite there being two 17 year olds in the group.

I could ramble on forever about UOAY, but it's great you finally discovered this classic song.

Let it be known that they did a different ad lib in the bridge for almost every live performance of the song.

  • I had a feeling you would provide an informative lore dump on this and you did not disappoint! I really need to go through their whole discography and this song is good motivation to do so.

  • Man, to have both yama and david as representatives of your fandom.. poor mamamoo don’t deserve this 😭

Anyway this era of mamamoo’s performances (from 2014-2017) is goated imo. Their songs matched their personality and energy perfectly, and the live performances, which were like the thing that they’re known for besides vocal abilities, of um oh ah yeh, you’re the best and yes i am, were so much fun to watch, and the best to represent mamamoo’s brand imo. It was definitely what got me hooked on them (besides moonsun but that’s another story lol)

  • Man, to have both yama and david as representatives of your fandom

Don't be an idiot. I was one of THE representatives of our fandom on the international side during their rise.

Do your homework. It's not hard to find me.

Do not ever put me in the same sentence as David again.

Only one MooMoo ever went to Korea and recorded every instance of their music being played just to show MooMoos how popular they are there. And you're talking to him.

I had a feeling you would provide an informative lore dump on this and you did not disappoint! I really need to go through their whole discography and this song is good motivation to do so.

There is some good lore for every song. You should try Decalcomanie next, and then request the substantial lore dump for that song--one of the biggest hits of their career. I even made a video about the story arc :pepe-smug:

  • Bruh we know each other from onehalyu days, you don’t need to advertise your history lol. In fact, it was one of your videos that first got me to notice mamamoo all those years back, and i even told you that lol if only oh hadn’t died such a tragic death back then and we didn’t have to migrate to this hellhole, but i digress 😪

Anyway, give it up yama. No matter how much you want to deny it, both you and david pop into people’s heads first when talking about mamamoo on akp. Don’t think i’m happy to admit that lol yall both annoying and loud, just on opposite ends of the spectrum :ellodarkness:

Bruh you should know better than to put me in the same category as David then. What has that man child ever done for our fandom or our Radish Queens? Other than set them up for hate on this forum constantly.

I never ever do that. People just shade them simply because they know I stan them.

But during the OH days, I was much less controversial and spent 95% of my time proudly promoting and protecting Mamamoo unproblematically.

I'm also much more eloquent and intelligent than David. Come on.

  • Anyways, this forum needs more Mamamoo praise threads, and it's always nice when it comes from people who aren't necessarily MooMoos.

I knew Pink Funky would be special from the moment I watched their showcase a decade ago

that is already another one I’ve been listening to because of UOAY, I’m very slow to consume entire discography’s but I’ll slowly get through more. Seems Wednesday S2 has taken the role of MMM promoter from you and David.

Hit me with that lore dump ;judgingpepe:

Hit me with that lore dump ;judgingpepe:

Decalcomanie was the follow up title track to Mamamoo's biggest hit of their careers to that point, You're The Best, a song that gave them their first PAK and music show win.

But Decalcomanie didn't have the same quick rise up the charts that YTB or even UOAY had, settling into the top 30.

Then Mamamoo was invited to perform at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and everything changed.

To understand the significance of being invited to perform there requires a history lesson within a history lesson. The BDFAs were infamous for even the most popular idols being met with the frostiest reception from the actors and actresses in attendance. It was almost like they were all competing for who could give the least energy to the idol performance.

SNSD, TVXQ and the Wonder Girls all performed there, and it's legitimately painful to watch.

Enter Mamamoo. They knew the reputation of this venue and understood the mission. So when they performed Decalcomanie, they had the genius idea of adjusting the lyrics of the song and inserting ad-libs to be full of references to all the famous movies of all the actors and actresses there.

And it was a sensational hit idea. The crowd loved it. The actors smiled and laughed for the first time I'd seen. And Mamamoo got a standing ovation by the end of the stage. Following the outstanding performance, Decalcomanie then climbed furiously up the charts and became the top song in Korea, and one of the most digitally impressive songs of that era.

Now it's one of the most popular songs in their discography.

You can witness the famous stage here

Mamamoo's stage was so well received that they were invited to perform the next year. First time that had ever happened.

That has only happened one other time ever since then.

    With NewJeans.

  • you really do have quite a knack for making mamamoo accomplishments sound like an epic tale of triumph haha, and even an accompanying video! Thanks for sharing, this is the type of stuff you can only really get from close fans and it’s always cool to learn about.

Yes, I always have had a flair for the dramatic when it comes to narrating the career arc and story of Mamamoo :meme-cheers:

I have a similar story or tale for just about every one of their major eras during their years of group activity

  • Man, I didn't miss AKP Forum. I was really sick, but my mental health was much better without reading all the nonsense from Yama-kid.🤣

BTW, I made a thread about this weeks ago.

Read this thread, they didn't pick this song because it's fun. It was intentional. It's MAMAMOO's Gay Anthem, basically. That's why it fits well for the show.

I agree, we're not in the same category, because I was there since PRE-DEBUT days pal! Not many international fans can say they knew MAMAMOO before their debut.

You call yourself a fan, but you didn't even mention why "UOAY" was a special song, you're only talking about popularity and Charts as usual.

The song and especially the MV was literally one of the first (if not the first) girl group song that was about WLW, cross-dressing, gender-swap and so on. They destroyed the usual Kpop standards with this song/MV.

This is the main reason Netflix used the song for Wednesday.

And let's not even mention the promotion for the MV. Solar and Moonbyul were on Dispatch because journalists thought Solar dating with a guy, but that was Byul.😂
