It's certainly appears to be an odd way of describing someone, especially if you simply say 'looks like a quail egg', as many would simply think of quail eggs as being small and speckled. The important context is the shape and, to a lesser extent, the size of a quail egg. Quail eggs are small and are more pointed on one end. I believe it's a reference to having a small head with a notably pointed jaw/chin, which is fitting in Karina's case. Her head does indeed look like a quail's egg, as the top of a quail's egg is the wider, rounder end.
