Is it ageist for me to say…

Changed the title of the thread from “Is it agist for me to say…” to “Is it ageist for me to say…”.
  • Maybe don't conclude on a specific year like it means anything. Just support what you like. I support BTS and I'm 45 and age has nothing to do with it. Its been 10 years and I can't seem to "outgrow" them. It's less about age and more about taste. If you can't get with any 5th generation groups so be it but it really doesn't need a final conclusion. Who knows what future generations will pop up.

  • It’s understandable to feel like you might not connect with much younger idols, but I don’t think that necessarily makes it ageist—it’s just personal preference. Many groups debut with a wide range of ages, including adults, even in newer generations. If a group feels too young for you to stan, it’s totally fine to just enjoy their music and support them in ways that feel comfortable. How you choose to engage with K-pop is your choice, and there’s no right or wrong way to be a fan.

  • Well... I would personally not consider that ageist.

    Amazing replies :borahae: Thanks everyone!

Was just a thought for future groups to come tbh! Younger idols will start debuting and it’s a strange reality check lol but music is timeless at the end of the day

Just come to the dark side known as J-Pop. Discover the greatness that is the Exile Tribe

no, for real, they are getting younger, but there's so many groups outside those big companies that debut and are older. People just either donn't want to check them out, or don't know about it. For Example:

They haven't debuted yet and they are all former well known idols:

Unless you have followed these idols it's impossible to know right away. You just have to look around, check out old groups you like where members left, see if they joined new groups etc. or simply let your playlist on spotify for example, run out and see what songs it starts playing. I have discovered groups that way.

  • This is true! I saw on YouTube a idol member debuting at 25 for 5th gen gg:!: she’s very pretty/talented and i think that’s amazing she’s going against the kpop norm but she’s already getting some backlash for her age

I really wish people would stop acting like late 20's - 30's is old.

For example the longest boy group i used to follow in america is NKOTB and they are in their 50's still selling out shows.

Age is nothing if they enjoy doing what they love.

In J-Pop the exile tribe has 84 members and majority are late 20's and up and even married with kids...

It really should not be made to be a problem to a.) be older and b.) be married.

  • It's fine because you don't have to follow every group.

I prefer when companies debut older idols because they can have a stronger start due to experience. Plus, it allows them to experiment with more concepts because a group is rightfully restricted with certain concepts based on age range of group.

  • It’s an eastern or kpop thing at least! Western artist rarely go through such things unless it’s Hollywood/acting imo :!:

I don’t think kpop was always this bad though didn’t Irene from RV debut at 23 and I’m sure she’s not the only one :/

Seems like current problems or companies are more upfront about it

It seems like only the newer fans or younger fans find an Issue with it and it really shouldn't be like that. I wish there was a way to make it more normalized that adults debuting are fine.

    It's quite sad :crycat3:

  • one can like or stan (or not) whatever group for whatever reason one wants

if you don't want to stan someone too young or too old so be it - that's your choice

now in terms of young idols especially female ones - I would say the younger they debut the more time they have to make money in the idol business and the idol business is not known to treat female idols well especially as they age

look at how many female kpop groups have had all original idols renew with the same company?

how many of them are still relatively active as a kpop idol group?

how many of the active ones are somewhat successful?

wonyoung started pd48 at 13 if she had a full 7 year contract during izone she would have completed an earned an entire contract's worth of money and experience and still be younger than the likes of Irene or Jisoo when they debuted
