    MEOVV vs izna

My biggest critic towards MEOVV is the fact that their releases are generic, there's no portrait of what makes them stand out in the crowd. And now my biggest crict towards izna is the fact that their sound is dated, tropical house is very 2014 coded.

My extended point of view for MEOVV and the reason why I believe they should be doing better by now even though it's been only 2 months since debut relies on the fact that SK looks forward to X label or Y label next group. Altought they might like artist before their debut, what matters is how their labels are going to debut and promote them. And there are strong expectations for groups debuting under the Big 3 companies, JYP, SM and YG. SK general public expects a hip hop sound, bold attitude and unique style groups from YGE just so they can devour the releases and make them rise on charts, YG gg have always been digital monsters.

And izna girlies, oh my. Altough izna is a nice song, it's very dated. Tropical House was used and almost abused back in 2014-2016. It's such a trademark from the past that it became obsolete. I wish Wake One would've worked on the song to make it more contemporaneous, making the tropical house bits more hip hop or eletronic even. Just not tropical house.

Both groups are absolutely talented and visually gorgeous, therefore remain as just 'potentials' because their labels refuse to study their audiences, map out a release plan on a solid strategy to build a fanbase and then expand and reach for beyond.

It's important to point out that I like both groups and their releases, the critic is towards the poor strategy and lack of touch from their labels.

To answer my own question, I belive debuting with a dated song is worse than debuting with a generic song. Generic just means that's something seen a lot lately. And there's dated, it's so passed its time it's not even competitive.

  • It's interesting that you consider MEOVV's "MEOW" debut to be generic, but not dated. A common critique is that it's both generic and dated. I disagree with that, of course. I think the use of Brazilian funk on that beat is something almost no other group has done for their debut aside from maybe TRI.BE.

There's even a thread on Reddit in which the poster claimed something along the lines of:

"MEOVV's debut is proof the hip-hop girl crush concept is outdated and doesn't work in 2024"

The "we make 'em meow" chorus gives them a whole lot of identity. Such lyrics could only fit them, not some other group. This is why I think it's far from generic.

It's like a Brazilian funk beat heavily inspired by drill hip hop, something I haven't heard much in K-pop. I'd say it's extremely experimental, far from generic. I don't think you'd hear such a song from other groups, which is why it's so polarizing for a lot of people. You either love it or hate it; there's no between.

It's extremely catchy to me. It's probably just not for most K-pop fans because they're too used to the music that's popular these days.

I can see how you'd think "TOXIC" or "BODY" is generic, though.

  • Yes Meow is dated but not generic however it’s nothing extraordinary this is the most teddy and he always use some genres from other countries most of his samples are Arabic.

Teddy didn't even produce the song. He hasn't produced any MEOVV songs so far.

I don't know why people expect any different, though. YGE and The Black Label will absolutely continue using their signature sound.

Other companies do this, too. SM always puts in the signature SM high note during the bridge of aespa's songs, and this has been done a lot in the generations of SM groups before aespa.

I like that signature sound from YGE, so I'll still like it regardless of which group is doing it. I think some people just exclusively like BLACKPINK when it comes to that sound.

  • A high note doesn’t equal to overused beat no one is surprised by TBL/yg being similar it just hilarious how they still haven’t grown and are doing the same thing over and over

You just don’t like that sound. Idols themselves acknowledge each of the big 4 companies have its own distinct signature style. There’s nothing wrong with this. Jinyoung Park has been making some variation of the same song for himself and some of his artists since forever.

  • The truth is all groups need to establish a base of fans. The more you stray away from the generic formula, there is a higher chance of a miss. That's not what you want for a debuting group.

However, that doesn't mean that they can't play around the edges to differentiate Meovv from the other groups. I think they did it successfully.
