Why 2nd gen ggs sound so much better than 4th gen ones?

    I got involved into kpop since 2018, so I totally missed 2nd gen era. Later step-by-step they conquered my heart. Nowadays top-5 of my faves all came from 2nd gen: BEG, 4Minute, EXID, 9Muses, 2ne1. I don't talk about fanboying which is impossible towards disbanded group. I am talking about the music and performance overall.

    If to compare then and now, even the small B-tier 2nd gen group will slay hard, cheering you up and making you dance with their music. Half-nugus like Rainbow, Stellar or 9Muses overperform the whole 2024 production, including my 4th gen faves KIOF and Young Posse. Sad but true. I even won't mention 2nd gen leaders here, because it's like heaven and earth, the diff is incomparable.

    What happened to kpop industry? Why it sounds so lame compared to 2nd gen? When that point of no return has been passed?

    Mostly because the pop in kpop is gone. Feels that everyting is so slow tempo today and few catchy songs. Feels like songwriters try do to everything so complicated, it's like the old style is too simple for them and they need do more "sophisticated" songs. Also a bit more groups that had fun songs compare to today when a lot is focused on the top groups.

    As someone who became a K-Pop fan during the waning years of the second generation, this topic is nonsensical at best.


    There are fantastic songs from both generations and absolute duds from both generations.


    But the beautiful thing about music, and its intrinsic quality being measured by each person's own standards and preferences, is that the songs I just deemed as duds might be deemed as fantastic and vice versa for someone else.


    Your question is based on a flawed premise, so there is no real answer to offer. And I know nobody here is qualified to present a credible analysis of the objective traits of these songs.

    f(x) had the best 3 album stretch in K-Pop history and I'll accept no arguments to the contrary
    By consensus opinion, Pink Bible is considered arguably the best K-Pop album ever released, and I personally can't really argue with that. But there are some days where I actually think Red Light is just as good, if not a little better, and 4 Walls is also a basically zero skip album for me.

    It doesn't have subtitles, but it somewhat deals with what you are referring to. He mainly talks about 1st gen Kpop groups and older Kpop singers, but I think it is relevant to 2nd gen.


    One of the points is that a lot of the famous artists from that era didn't come out of nowhere. There are a lot of artists that came out fully developed because they were former DJs, backup dancers, etc. These are the ones that practiced and developed their skills on their own. It is why they are more charismatic and have better stage presence. They learned their skills in night clubs and live stages instead of the Kpop system.


    It is also harder to fit these natural entertainers into a group after a certain point, because the visual threshold became harder. In the past, you were allowed to have visual holes in groups as well as weak singers since they all had their roles. It also doesn't help that these pool of candidates, while have a lot of charisma and talent, tend to have a checkered past. Those type of candidates probably got filtered out early on since Kpop wants no controversy.


    He also mentions the development of other platforms like youtube and tik tok. In the past, the only avenue for these people to break into the entertainment industry was through becoming a singer. So the pool of talents were much larger.
