It has been confirmed that YG Entertainment has transferred the trademark rights for the stage names "G-Dragon" and "GD" to Big Bang member and singer G-Dragon (real name Kwon Ji-yong). It appears that YG made this generous decision based on the judgment that the added value of the trademark rights would be maximized when transferred to G-Dragon. It has been reported that this trademark transfer was done without compensation.
According to a report by TenAsia on the 1st, YG Entertainment (hereafter YG) has decided to transfer the trademark rights for "G-Dragon," "GD," and "GD" that it owned to G-Dragon. The reason behind this decision is that G-Dragon is a very symbolic artist to YG, and the name "G-Dragon" itself embodies his identity.
Accordingly, G-Dragon can now freely use the stage name 'G-Dragon' for his future solo activities.
Regarding this, a YG official told Ten Asia, "The trademark rights for G-Dragon and GD have been transferred to the artist." G-Dragon's agency Galaxy Corporation also explained, "We understand that the trademark rights for 'G-Dragon' have been transferred," and "There is absolutely no problem with using the name G-Dragon for activities." Since trademark rights are usually recognized as important intellectual property rights (IP), YG's decision is expected to be recorded as an important case in the industry.
