A girl can buy something as insignificant as coffee for boy and yourself. In NYC, the guys usually pays. You'll often hear, "the one who asks the other person out pays," but the person asking is usually the guy anyway (dynamics differ in same sex dates obviously, but I can't speak to those). There are may foreign students and workers, and they also hold onto the traditional "guy pays." If you are dating a friend, then things can be flexible, but the man is expected to pay. I recently went on a date and the woman did offer to split, it's not a serious attempt since she actually also expected me to pay. It was just a friendly gesture. If I decided to allow the split, then there wouldn't have been a second date
