tiktok probably helped a ton. every celebrity in korea was dancing to this song for clout at the time. and the song was played over and over in every tv show. personally though, it has a nice melody. that's good enough for me. kpop lyrics are usually pretty dumb anyway so i dont really bother too much with that stuff

I don't really get catchy though. The melody doesn't even really go anywhere.
Ditto is more in the catchy side outside of the 'we can go high igh igh igh' it's really chill.
And I haven't seen the dance. Not too interested in dancing but it makes sense then if that's a reason for its success since I'm having trouble understanding.
Fine.
This song is like the best (or worst) kind of drug. Once you get hooked, you can't stop yourself from coming back for more. Clearly I don't feel alone in that, because no girl group song in the history of the charts has had longevity like Hype Boy. We're 1.5 years away from its release, and it is still a top 25 song and on track to become the girl group song with the most likes in MelOn history.
I mention that not to boast about its numbers (okay, maybe a little bit), but to emphasize its replayability. People not only get hooked on the song but they don't get tired of it.
And there are so many points to get hooked. The verses are soft, light and melodic. The chorus is vibrant, dynamic and full of excitement. Even the pre-chorus has addictive qualities to it. And the dance brings all of it together; it's the perfect choreo to follow along to, whether you're solo dancing or vibing with your friends. I can't find a single flaw in this song. Even the production of the song itself sounds both familiar and fresh, and the voices of the NewJeans members amplifies that effect.
My first NJ thread here ever was basically me wondering how Hype Boy wasn't their smash hit song on debut
A little more than a year later, nobody would argue Attention is a bigger hit than Hype Boy.

Which song do you prefer? (they're both great songs)

Yeah you're definitely right about that.
It won song of the year on allkpop when I done akp music awards xD
I watched the choreo just now I think I get it a lot more now. The song is more of a story music wise.
Thanks you didn't actually care about love dive right?
Is that the music or the singing part?
Both of course.
It's just a great song. But Attention always wins as New Jeans' best song for me.
Yes attention is a bop.

It's a dance that invites you to join in the fun. You may think it's pretty basic as you can feel the groove, but there're subtleties and layers to it.
Now apply this principle to the music itself. The trick is making everything feel simple and intuitive.
