  • Apparently the guest said that "Americans own English" and if an artist is Korean they should only sing in Korean, or something to that effect. Reading the various transcriptions of the podcast, there's a nasty streak of Orientalism throughout the entire thing (both the host and guest are white Americans) and the guest targeted only Hybe groups for criticism despite other groups doing similar things. Clearly no Asians of any sort were consulted. I'm not sure how it even got published.

Looking at screenshots of the guest's Twitter account, she really, really hates Hybe groups for whatever reason. (she preemptively blocked every ARMY, even those who never interacted with her- even I'm blocked and I didn't even know who this person was until today!)

  • To be honest, it's probably kinda weird for them that Jung Kook who isn't fluent or can't even communicate well in English but got the whole album in English. If he's fluent in English then they couldn't find reason to criticise him because they're a lot of Europeans singing in English. For example Celine Dion's mother tongue was French but she was fluent in English. Coco Lee, Nicki (Indonesian) and many others. But that's not the case with JK.

Americans prefer someone like Taylor Swift who actually composes and writes her own songs.

Me myself love Taylor and her songs. I consider her one of the most talented people in music industry. She's a genius 😍😍😍

Shakira wasn't super fluent in English when she released her first English album (although she was more fluent than JK). Then you have someone like, say, Sarah Brightman who will sing in Itlalian or Spanish but doesn't know either (or at least she didn't back in the 90s, to my knowledge). JK said he wanted to be not only a kpop star but a pop star (which is why he sang in English), so the hosts are judging him by the wrong metrics. It makes it pretty clear that they did little research or they would know that he said this.

Americans prefer Americans lol, they’re always in their tiny little bubble. Thinks the NFL is the biggest league out there when there’s football. Lots of artists in America don’t always write their own songs, Beyonce and Rihanna had like a hundred song writers behind them…..TS is lucky in a sense that she was a white girl in a country which embraces country music before moving on to pop. She will always be their home girl, no foreign artist is ever going to matter if they’re not born in the US, no matter if they wrote and produced a million albums 😂

  • I listened to it. I’m not sure the premise or the point they were trying to make. She sounded bitter and was seemed to be an expert on Hybe’s methods and motivations

First of all, if thats the case then Lisa or other non koreans who didnt know Korean before, shouldnt be a kpop star..

Americans are pretentious and many are monolingual lol.

If you think Taylor’s lyrics are genius then I think you will enjoy RM or Suga/AgustD lyrism too.. and they dont just talk about love and feelings.. check them out.. or maybe you can start with Jungkook’s own songs.. here

The beauty of singing songs in English, it makes some people check out their other non English songs. You see, being multilingual is really cool. Many kpop groups have japanese or chinese songs too.

  • Deserved for a repeat offender.

NYT is just generally terrible (just look at their horribly biased reporting about the Israel-Palestine war). Many, many years ago, I had a NYT subscription. It printed a lot of rubbish 15 years ago, so I'm not surprised we're seeing this with their podcasts too.

  • JK's recent songs are more into pop imo not kpop if its fully english, just like lisa's money which imo is also pop (well pop & hiphop) because there is no korean lyrics in it

  • I guess it ultimately it comes back to what makes kpop kpop...

is it the language? nationality? ethnicity? producers? origin of companies? etc etc

The people on that podcast have just a history of having a hate boner for BTS and being racist. Imagine saying that SuperM has a better audience because their crowd has more white people...

the exact words were "SuperM had a crowd with a healthier white ratio"
