Biggest streaming platforms in South Korea according to Herald Economy

  • Youtube is still a passive platform for music streaming. It has grown fast because it was bundled with YT premium for watching videos without ads

Melon still has sizable audience size for a domestic music streaming service, and is still bigger than Genie, Vibe, bugs all added

Every streaming service is passive regardless if it's music or movies/tv shows. Netflix is the king of passive streaming but no one will argue their position as top dog

Melon should be treated like itunes back when Spotify and Apple Music overtook them; supplementary material but it wasn't the main focus

  • This data was in August. There are articles elsewhere saying YouTube is bigger.

But according to this one Melon dropped 9% YTY August, while YouTube grew 30%. It is now November, and YouTube will be definitely the biggest next year, if not already.

Theres been articles saying that youtube is bigger for the past 1,5 years, but most have been based solely on installation rates on android, which isnt the best measure for a number of reasons, and it has never lined up with actual chart data when songs still had(has?) more streams on melon when looking at weekly stream data.

This article in particular is based on a report from august and seems much more well researched than most other articles about market share in the last few years.

it's totally the opposite youtune music is what the general public is listening to nwadays, melon seems more fan driven nowadays Melon used to be good for evaluating GP appeal in the past.

The report states that youtube leads in college students but in the other age groups it still melon thats ahead, that would be an argument for as why melon is still a better data point for the gp overall

That doesnt really makes sense, even if youtube is spotify now(the biggest service) then melon would still be apple with no other service even being close in market share.

So, I guess Melon sits at like 33% market share? :/

I never agreed with how Melon was regarded as the sole important k-charting platform by many K-pop fans, even when Melon had a +40-50% market share. Now it's even more evident how the streaming scene has changed.

To be clear, even artists themselves only ever used to really care about melon charting

Another reason melon has been the benchmark is also because the endless amount of chart data available, its easy to pick and analyze on a myriad of datapoints, down to the hour or even minutes in some cases. No other chart/service makes data available to such an extent.

  • college students and people in their 20's and early 30's are still the general public and no as far as I remember (because I actually linked some of those articles) is that they were predicting that youtube music was gonna surpass melon not they have surpassed melon then. it's only now the possibility of surpassing them is around the corner lol as you can see. I also would argue that older people in general don't stream as much as younger people. I mean, there are exceptions obviously.

I'm not denying that melon appeals to general public but also it has been known that melon (at least in the last few years) has become fandom driven since certain songs chart higher at certain time of the day. Another thing to consider it that t uls have decreased like the accumulated UL's considerably. if we compare them to years before. the consumption of melon as streaming service have dismissed with others favoring other platforms like youtube music.

I'm not saying melon is not relevant anymore though it's kind of dying lol just kidding but seriously my argument is that youtube music along with melon should be considered for digital chart discussions. I don't think melon is enough nowadays considering that things are changing and people don't rely on melon to stream music anymore.

im not really disagreeing. But many seem to be saying that melon is now worthless and only youtube matters which doesnt make much sense, surely if melon should be downplayed then the other service thats around the same number of users isnt much better either.

As for fan streaming, yes its there on melon but its nowhere close to what it used to be a few years ago, and the only fandom that has real weight is LYWs fandom. The daily chart is still based ony daily uls, a stronger filter than youtube which counts an unknown amount of streams per user every day and its also a chart that tends to somewhat favour songs with mvs that target mostly a younger audience in general.

Youtube music is very likely to be the clear market leader in a year or so with current trajectory, but i dont think they or any other serivce will ever get to the size that melon was at in 2019 again or get the same age bracket reach it have/had. The market and peoples habits have changed so much and theres so many other competing media not just music these days (youtubers, streamers, podcasts, games etc)

My only real gripe with youtube is that there is no similar data available as the korean services have (mainly ul data).

A pro with youtube is seeing music that is normally never present/available on the domestic charts (japanese music mainly)

  • until youtube or spotify gets tracking, hourly updates and graphs etc that k charts provide. it will always be relevant.

like every fandom are like these every hour
