Will 4Gen Girl Groups be able to escape the Japanese trap?

  • Interesting choice of words... "trap", "bogged down". How does promoting in Japan prevent any group from promoting elsewhere too?

    I think maybe one can argue that it's about the opportunity cost of promoting in one area/country vs another?

    obviously groups can promote whereever they want but they have limited time and resources so it's a matter of deciding (or the company deciding what's the best use of that)

  • BH and BTS were focused on Japan after China started banning Kpop in China. BTS actually were doing well in China before all that. They continued to focus a lot on Japan even though they were getting increased demand in the US. When the demand in the US couldn’t be ignored anymore, that’s when they started focusing more on the US. After BTS, HYBE is still taking it slow but they are pushing their groups more into the US. Japan is the golden goose but the US is the holy grail. If any groups have demand in the US then they will eventually tour there. Just like how TXT, EN-,and SVT are being tested with US venues that aren’t that big yet. HYBE can and will target Japan and The US at the same time. HYBE has branches in the US and Japan. I’m still not sure what Scooter does as the head of the US branch though.

  • Right from the start it was going to attack Japan only. Tzuyu was added as an afterthought and the Huang An shit basically ended any chances Tzuyu had in the Sinosphere. The Covid thing kept the members in Korea and JYP realized the needs for Japanese fans would be better served by a Japanese-only (although technically the youngest is an American) group, hence NiziU was born.


    So it is ironic that Twice became popular in USA after the contract was renewed and JYP would take significantly less money and Twice hitting a home run would do him little good, and when Twice itself is a mature group who is unlikely to advance further in its main bases

    JYP didn't realize anything, he planned to debut a group there long before Twice. Misamo were part of that trainee team until 6mix crumbled one trainee after another. Tzuyu & Chinese ambition was what happened afterwards as Tzuyu's popularity in Sixteen was unexpected


    And Twice peak popularity in US is The Feels, one year before the renewal. You suck at this

  • Japan Dome Concerts are the biggest money makers in South East Asia for Concerts.


    You can only escape the Japanese Trap if the Concerts you do elsewhere are worth more money with less expenses elsewhere.


    But the reality is, there aren't many Kpop groups that don't have the popularity in Japan to do Dome Concerts so they are avoided
