Honestly, I am watching the World Cup events with a bit of a shock. I know that western countries are more open the the rest when it comes to lgbt, which I respect, but holly shit, they are literally ready to fight for this . Like no kidding, it is almost like westerners feel about this whole stuff religiously, as if something important is being taken away from them. Denmark is literally looking to quit Fifa over the armband stuff. Like 6000 workers dying or women being 2nd class citizens doesn't bother them as much, it is lgbt where they draw the line.
I did't realize the west feels so strongly about lgbt

...pretty sure people care about worker rights and women too. at least on here, i've seen just as much discussion on these topics as lgb activism. the latter probably stands out to you more just because you're more conversation and aren't as used to seeing it in media.
People might be discussing but I haven't seen any team trying to wear an armband or anything honoring the workers. It is lgbt message they mostly care about.
can and SHOULD coexist.
But they don't coexist, only one seems important enough to wear a badge or smth

From what I know, the LGBT discussion when it comes to Qatar has been super heated recently because of certain stuff Qatar representatives have said. The death of workers has definitely been a huge topic in its own right over the past few years, and if I'm not mistaken, that that's the reason why a lot of people asked countries to boycott the world cup this year. Feels like a recency thing more than "they care more about lgbt than dead workers", it's just what's in the spotlight in the moment

I think all the fuss media and teams/countries associations make now is too little too late. They had almost a decade to bring up issues on LGBT, human rights, worker deaths etc and more but never did to a serious extent. Now if a fans hat is taken away the media is reporting as top news. It's hypocritical.
At Any time the past few years countries like England, Germany, Holland etc could've made joint statements or threats to walk to make FIFA bend to them but they didn't, now when the WC is here they try to make a cheap statement like armbands but immediately cave in when FIFA says no. Iran players in comparison refused to sing their anthem in support of protesters and they could face consequences when they return home. England doing the knee at the same time as if they have credibility anymore is laughable tbh.

This is the worst type of whataboutism. Throwing shade at the west because of some perception that they care more about LGBT rights than worker's or women's right is basically just a huge distraction from the shit that deserves the real censure for actually perpetrating these things - like QATAR. SMH

it's just an armband. that's more like rallying under a trendy sentiment. it's not like they're doing anything important to help lgb causes.

and did they? no. preaching about human rights but doing nothing of importance is not really caring about human rights. it's all words but no deeds. countries in question that are western countries, had decided that money is more important. they care more about money than lgbt population, women or dead workers even if they pretend that's not the case. if you are honest then show your stance and boycott the tournament. the internet has been calling for wc boycott but it's not happening. ordinary people just want to watch a game and enjoy.
everything is so hypocritical.

people shouldn't be killed for having a different sexuality.
what??? I am confused. Who is killing people for having different sexualities? I only knew about the armband/political stuff being banned in the country.

Qatar has a non-enforced death penalty for homosexuals (under Sharia law, so only for muslims.) Western homosexuals have been imprisoned there in the past. As far as I know only Saudi Arabia and Iran actually execute people for homosexuality though.
