LA has the most recording studios compared to any other city in the US , by a pretty wide margin I think. New York is next, with like 100 less and then Nashville, though that's mostly for country music.

You don't HAVE to go to LA, but that's where most of the resources for the music industry are, just like the movie industry, but to a lesser degree. That's why so many entertainers live there. It's the entertainment capital.
