How did Hyoyeon deal with toxic comments?

  • Recently, SNSD participated in the show "Knowing Bros" as a guest to promote their 15th debut anniversary album. In the part of sharing each member's keywords, Hyoyeon said "I believe that basic human nature is evil".

When asked why, Hyoyeon shared about the malicious comments she has faced during her 15-year career:

"I started thinking like that when I was active in music. In the past I never cared about malicious comments and always kept a positive attitude. But they didn't know anything about me and kept writing things maliciously based on false rumors or body-shaming. They don't even think about how others feel when they write them. How can't I angry when read those comments?

They should come and see me face-to-face. If I don't have a schedule, I really want to meet all of them and tell them to tell me straight."

When asked if she would respond to those comments, Hyoyeon bluntly replied, "They're not worth it for me. But when you think about how we were born knowing nothing about the world and starting to learn everything, I think human nature is inherently evil."

  • The thing is she didn’t at first. The bullying against her was so brutal she admitted on Happy Together in 2013 she went into her shell and as a result watching a lot of their earlier group shows (pre 2011) it was very obvious she was very quiet and kept to herself. It was so bad on some shows scenes with her were edited out because she was too boring. I was a new Sone at the time and even I thought she had zero personality, it wasn’t until I saw Hello Baby where she was free to act how she normally does everyday with her members that I saw the real Hyo. I thought it’s like watching 2 completely different idols, the Hyo on Hello Baby vs the Hyo on Star King or whatever show.

Ion addition to the bullying SM made things worse by giving her scraps for songs and consequently she began to question if she had any talent as singer. Basically Hyo felt lost as an idol

I forgot where but in 2010 she said that her mum complained she barely saw her daughter on tv and from then on she’ll try to be true to herself. And so she did.

From about 2011 we get a more confident Hyo who said and did what came to her mind. She was no longer the wallflower, she was loud, silly and very playful. Almost overnight she became an instant variety star and she was regularly guesting on shows both with SNSD and more importantly alone. Nowadays it’s taken for granted how funny and affable she is on TV because everyone assumes that’s how she’s always been. But the truth bullying was so dire she closed herself off. Thankfully she was very strong and let her charms speak for her which let her blossom into the Hyo we know today.

  • interesting I think the increased presence of the internet - social media and anonymity has increased the "evil" in that people are no longer accountable for their words or actions...

99% of them would probably not spew such vitriol face to face but behind a computer screen - fair game for them
