Everyone and everything has to be coordinates month in advance. The album, the single, the music video all have to be dropped in sync at the same time. Its like preparing 4-6 weeks to get jammed with content for a day and get overloaded.

Its to the point that if MV is 30 sec late, the company gotta right an apology

Its over bearing and stuffy, people get over it quickly and move on

In contrast the recent Onew album was promoted so differently by UMJ. He released his two singles, a cover album, album, 2 MVs all scattered over 3 month. Not even MVs were released at the same time as the songs. I really enjoyed. I got time to appreciate the song, then the MV. The album was released in two parts and each got their own appreciation. Even for going to shows, he only did 2 thing per week. It was just calm and more enjoyable for me.

  • I think this is one reason NJ's debut was so hyped. It was a step away from the usual formula.

I think a lot of fans are tired of how cookie cutter all the promotions are. No one is doing anything different. We all know, comeback announced, teasers start about 2 weeks before the comeback. We get album previews, group teasers or subunit teasers, then individual teasers (usually 2 different looks), then we get the song medley, and MV teasers.

Then they promote the song for like 2 weeks on music shows and go on a few YouTube channels and Korean variety shows. Wash, rinse, repeat. It is utterly predictable and B.O.R.I.N.G.

  • Well promo like Beyoncé did is pretty good. BP promo in 2020 was spectacular too. I agree with you. kpop promo in general feel rushed. I think its mainly linked to their local shows and their voting system that's SO DAMN FRUSTRATING btw

    It is

which is why I absolutely love what UMJ did for Onew

They targeted concert as their goal (not music shows or charts), and bc of the longer and more spaced out promos his tickets keep getting sold out and they just keep adding dates to it.

Im really surprised the big groups are not doing things differently

after you accumulated a certain amount of fandom support, shouldnt they be more free of the rigid style of promotion?

I don't know, but it's zapped all of my excitement.

I can't even get hyped for Twice's comeback since I know this routine. I'll definitely be hyped for the MV release, but I could care less about the teasers at this point unless JYPE switches it up. Like I'm interested, but it's not going to get me hyped like it used to.

One thing Sneakers did right was having those 2 very extreme teasers. It had MIDZY in an uproar (intentional or not), and people got excited (or dreaded) to hear the song because they didn't know what to expect.

I think a lot of groups have lost that element of surprise for me.

  • I didn't think about it like that before. I'm not bored of it personally. It's predictable but does have some slight variations from group to group, which is nice. However, you do have a point. It would be nice to see people switch it up once in a while, especially for bigger groups who have a pretty secure fandom. I'd argue that unfortunately that count turn into a point for fanwars, but everything does somehow, so it's whatever at that point, people will be immature I guess. Plus, I'd imagine it must be pretty tiring and borderline repetitive for the idols too after a while. Sure, it's a different song with a different dance, different lines and so on, but the same routine.

Alright, you convinced me. I hope more of my faves switch things up soon.

you havea good point about the fanwar

people expect top groups to break records and to do that they have to follow the same mundane formula

rather than being bored of it, I think it stops me from fully appreciating the whole thing

Yeah. Sadly, people could twist it into a measure of how good a fandom is or how successful they are and be like: "Well, at least my faves don't follow the same old stupid formula yours do! Yours are too nugu to ever dream of doing that!' and nonsense like that.

True, you do have a point.

I see. I think I can understand why that would be.

What I would GIVE for Twice to drop a surprise MV. Like no one month warning. Just drop it. Even if it's a b-side.

I think the closest we got was "Cry For Me', and that was a MOMENT.

people find it weird but I never listen to SHINee albums all in one day

I listen to a new song per day

I like to cherish the novelty longer

That's more self control than I have. I remember when The Album came out, once I knew it had eight tracks, I knew it would be a while before getting new music, so I wanted to space it out. I told myself I'd stretch it out over two weeks and listen to one new song each week. It wouldn't be the only song I listened to all day for the whole week, I could still listen to their older songs, ones from previous weeks and songs from other groups or outside of K-Pop too. That ended up not happening. though, because I got too curious and too impatient for my own good.
