for acts like snsd, is it true that only taeyeon is doing well as a soloist (singer)?

  • Never thought of it that way until someone pointed it out.

    Approved the thread.
  • Yup the rest are flopping when it comes to music

  • Pretty much. Tiffany hasn't released anything in Korea since 2016, Hyoyeon isn't exactly known as a singer and the rest haven't done anything for years - Seohyun and Yuri for example released mini albums years ago but moved on to acting full time instead.

However their success is very obvious in other fields like TV and acting as they're booked constantly.

  • But her and Hyoyeon are the only ones consistently focusing on music right? The others are mainly in acting, some in musical and variety shows etc.

Hyoyeon was always the least popular member so it is what it is, but Taeyeon is like A++++ tier level as a soloist.

  • For music metrics alone yes, taeyeon is the only one doing well everywhere. Right behind tae I would put yoona, her acting gigs are popping off lately and I could see her becoming one of the legendary names on the industry if the pace she had now continue.

It's hard being a soloist. Yuri, Tiffany and Seohyun have released albums but didn't do that well. For Yuri and Seohyun, it's good they moved on to acting. I don't think they would have been successful if they sticked to music.

  • Yes.

Taeyeon is the most successful soloist coming off from a successful group.

Others in SNSD are not doing music, or are not doing as well as Taeyeon in Music.

    Other cases,

    • Hyuna had a short stint in Wonder Girls and 4minute was basically Hyuna and friends, so effectively she has been solo since start, even so she is not as successful as Taeyeon.
    • Sunmi, again was part of Wonder Girls, doing decently as solo, but not Tier 1 like Taeyeon.
    • Chungha, Somi - IOI had too short a stint, again doing well. But not Tier 1. Sejeong is not doing well in singing, but has succeeded in acting, variety etc.
    • Eunbi, Jo Yuri, Yena - ex-Izone, are starting their solo careers, but yet to find massive success.
    • Ex-Mamamoo, Ex-Gfriend - have launched their solo careers, yet to find success.
    • Ex-SISTAR: Again nothing big happening with them Hyolyn or Soyou either.

And even among BGs, G-Dragon and Baekhyun are probably the most successful, but their group activities are still recent enough.

BTS solos have started, but J-Hope did not beat LYW or Be'O on the charts this year.

Twice Nayeon has had a good start, but still too early to say.

So far, the most successful case is Taeyeon. Her own stats on Melon is better than SNSDs.

At this point, she is second only to IU when it comes to female soloists.

  • None of the girls has had the solo singing career Taeyeon has, Yoona and Hyoyeon aren't precisely known singers, Yuri and Seohyun released their solos ages ago, Sooyoung has only released collaborative, charity singles and OSTs and Sunny a few OSTs in all these years, and Tiffany's solo sound while in American sounded rather dated, with those resumes is plain to see why Tae is the most succesful singer of them all. The rest of the girls are excelling in other areas, such as acting and varieties.

  • Teayeon is still technically part of SNSD, so Lisa/Rose/Jennie could be included. All three have better international numbers per single than Teayeon. Lisa is the only k-pop soloist who's numbers can compete with popular Western soloists (and maybe the BTS boys if you include men).

Chungha was arguably Teir 1 around 2018-2019, but hasn't shown staying power. Sunmi has also been hit and miss, but with some huge hits.

Somi, Yuri and Yena are still young for soloists, so they have plenty of time to establish themselves, and Somi and Yena already have hits. Taeyeon started her solo career around 26, about 5 years older than them. You could almost fit an entire GG career in that time.

Technicality doesn't matter, SNSD is not active, whereas BP is active, sort of.

That's a key difference, will BP solos do well when the group has entered official hiatus?

Even now their charting in Korea wasn't that great, international - yes that's a different story, even that should suffer if BP is retired.

Occasional hits is possible for all, but consistency is the key.

Taeyeon solo started along with SNSD and paralleled it, then she ramped up after their hiatus.

I am betting none of the soloists coming out of Twice, BP, BTS, EXO will better Taeyeon as a soloist consistently, once their groups go passive, in Korea.

And even internationally they will not be the toppers.

The group being active or not, makes a huge difference.

As time gap grows between the groups active past and their solos, lesser will be their success.

    Anyway future will tell.

Based on that than I would say Somi is a major threat. She was active in a group for only 10 months, didn't produce music for a couple years, came back with consistent top 40 singles as a young soloist, despite only releasing about 2 songs per year, and had her first top 10 five years after disbandment at 20 years old. Outside Korea, Somi has some of the best Spotify streams of any soloist except for BP/BTS solos. With that kind of staying power her career will be as long as she wants it to be.

Lisa will very likely continue to be bigger internationally. The gap is very large right now (just Money has 500M+ Spotify streams). Even if she drops considerably after disbandment Lisa would still be bigger.
