What are you talking about? The thing that made her weirdness very obvious is her instagram with those creepy pictures that she posted there. Her instagram was created only in 2021.

do you know how many groups and fandoms there are in SM? maybe you should stop treating all of us like a monolith? MHJ worked mostly with SHINee and f(x) and that's why their fans were more familiar with her than say TVXQ or SNSD or SUJU or EXO fans. for the huge majority of kpop fans, including most SM stans, the criticism was directed at SM as a company because they didn't know MHJ, exactly like how in most concept controversies, kpop fans criticise the companies and not the art directors or the staff behind the scenes. MHJ is a different case because of the wau HYBE promoted her and made her the face of the group, they were like "here is the art director, now you know whom to criticise"
