Diversity in New Jean's video

  • I read an article on a site that will not be named that praised the diversity in New Jean's music video for Hype Boy. They mentioned that one of the love interests in the video is black and another is looks to be Hispanic and another may be non-binary.

Have we ever seen diversity like this before? Do you think it will help or hurt them in different markets? Or are we to the point that people won't take notice at all?

I'm sure I've read the same article! It's good to know the diversity is more than just white people, which might send the wrong message about Eurocentric ideals and whatnot. That was something that rubbed me the wrong way at first in the "Attention" video, but I was glad to see they included more in the "Hype Boy" videos.

I think it's the first time where the diverse characters are included as part of the plot, and they're not just token characters for the sake of diversity. They have a story to them, which is tasteful representation. I think it will help in different markets as long as they continue doing this tastefully. People definitely will take notice; that's why the article exists and that's why there are multiple threads about it.

Oh, I didn't see other threads about it. I'll have to take a look.

And yes, it sounds like it was tastefully done. TBH, I've been waiting to see a black love interest in a kpop video ever since noticing white love interests in Big Bang's shoots. The closest I've ever seen is a black dancer dancing with Yoon in Winner's Really Really.

What's interesting is that I also thought of BIGBANG's music videos during Alive era, particularly "Bad Boy" and "Blue"!

I also thought of how there were POC models of different ethnic groups in WINNER's "REALLY REALLY" video, which was cool to see. They were dancers, though, so it was a bit different.

This time around, it's nice to see diversity as part of the plot itself.

yup, you don't know how much I really really (ummm, that wasn't intentional lol) wished that one of the girls in Bad Boy was black or that there were actual love interests in Really Really. Still, it was more than what we usually get.
