I. Introduction
iKON is a 6 member boy group under YG entertainment. Their current lineup has Bobby, Jay, Ju-ne, Song, DK and Chan. B.I is a former member who left back in 2019.
II. Career
Back on January 3, 2011, B.I and Jinhwan were recruited under YG Entertainment as trainees. Bobby joined them a week later. These three were training together to form Team B for Mnet’s reality survival show, WIN: Who Is Next. In 2012, Ju-ne, Yunhyeong, Donghyuk joined Team B. Cementing the lineup.
WIn: Who Is Next aired in 2013. Team B competed against Team A to be able to debut as a group. There were three rounds performances and public voting. Team A won, and eventually debuted as the group, Winner.
Team B released two singles from the program: “Just Another Boy” and “Climax”. Team B as appeared in Taeyang (BIGBANG)’s music video, “Ringa Linga”.
Team appeared in another reality survival show, Mix & Match, in 2014. This show was a sequel to WIN: Who Is Next. The goal of the show was to finalize the lineup for the group, iKON.
YG Entertainment’s CEO, Yang Hyunsuk, stated that the name symbolizes their goal to become an “icon for Korea”, which is where the “K” comes from.
Bobby, B.I, and Jinhwan’s spots in iKON were already secured. That left the rest of Team B to compete against three new trainees; Jung Jin-hyeong, Yang Hong-seok, and Jung Chan-woo.
The final lineup became the remaining members of Team B with the new addition of the member, Chanwoo.
iKON officially debuted back on September 15, 2015 with their single, “My Type”. Welcome Back, their debut album, had the first half of the full album released on October 1st. Two more singles, “Apology” and "Anthem”, were dropped on November 16. The full version of Welcome Back was released on December 24.
B.I departed on June 12, 2019 after Dispatch uncovered messages from him showing attempts to buy marijuana and LSD. He was also accused of evading police charges. This led to YG terminating his contract.
In April 2021, iKON also competed in Kingdom: Legendary War with other boy groups.
