I will never understand people coming for rookie groups using established artists.
This is embarrassing for your life and soul
Not really, because in K-pop, for groups from major agencies, the rookie years are their strongest years, whereas it becomes increasingly tougher for veterans to stay on the top ranks.
So the usual dynamic of - don't use veterans against rookies, is not always applicable. It depends on the context.

Is it possible to define what makes a performer an "idol" ?
Makes:
1. Identified, trained and debuted by an agency - the idol trainee system pioneered by Lee Soo Man.
2. Should be a dancing singer - not just sings, not just dances- but does both on a regular basis.
3. Must be mostly performing K-pop - not pure ballads, pure Hip-Hop etc., but a popular fusion of many genres
4. Must be highly engaged in promotions, active with fan-service.
Other attributes like "Being in a group", works only in the combination of the above 4 criteria.
Groups are not unique to K-pop, vocal groups like Big Mama exists in Korea, but they don't sing Kpop.
CNBlue did pop(rock inspired), but since they don't all dance-sing, they are a band and not a group.
And of course there is a long list of former-group members, going solo - still being Kpop idols. Taeyeon, Sunmi etc,
Thoughts?

she emphasizes being an artist she will always remain an idol
She doesn't right? In the Pieces documentary, she says she sees no difference between idol, artist and musician, sees them in continuum.
But rather it is some others, who see her as an artist.
Mostly in complimentary way, since artists are considered better than idols (which IU disagrees with )
Or because if she is considered an idol, then their favourites will not be holding many of the records -digitals, popularity, IT-ness etc.
In any case, her being an artist, does not lead to her being not an idol, i.e. once an idol, always an idol.
-
IU has likely avoided the Idol tag because she doesn't dance when she performs
She dances when she performs.
Not to every song, but she dances for many.

Dude I don't get what you point is anymore.
I've already answered that yes idols remain idols and the ones you mentioned are examples of that.
Now you're trying to define an idol which is obviously going to vary from person to person which you've said is a different issue anyway.
Thanks, just confirming.

Yeah, the ones you mentioned are still treated as idols because they still have idol qualities about them like doing the usual promo, having their careers mainly managed by label (music given to them, concepts etc) and generally targeting younger audiences like pop stars almost always do.
Even someone like Taeyeon who started off having a solo career doing OSTs then went full time into a very successful solo and is arguably closest to being an " artist" still seen as an idol. It doesn't negatively impact get at all so why not go along with it especially as she very clearly likes most of the usual idol stuff like TV shows and promoting with members.
Promos - Not unique to idols, even trot, hiphhop do so.
Managed by labels - again not unique to idols.
Music given to them - then are self producing cases like Soreon, G-Dragon not idols?
Targeting younger audience- that's difficult to quantify, isn't it?
I agree that even they diversify, it is good to have the label, which brings back to the original question.
Is once an idol, always an idol?

Wasn't IU in an idol group as well?
In Good entertainment as a trainee, yes she planned for a group called Five Girls, but then she went to Loen and debuted as a soloist.

Liu Bei.. is immaterial.. the true hero is Zhuge Liang.
Again you are giving a hidden compliment that "IU is the Zhuge Liang of Kpop".. so nice.
But why are you leaving the story half way,
Eventually Cao Caos fell to the Simas and ZL(Liu Bei) ran out of resources, and Simas were left ruling the 3 kingdoms, but for a short span.
So if BTS is Cao Wei, IU is Shu Han, BP is Eastern Wu - then someone has to first capture BTS from inside - Enhyphen/Txt?, then push IU out with a "honourable retirement" and then devastate BP.
That is a better analogy than Hannibal/Scipio or Napoleon/Wellington.

This is a good compilation of the light stick show at Jamsil..

Really? Is there a comparable venue available until then?
No. Kakao is building one, but don't think it will be the large.
Other option is the football stadium.. But that is not liked by Soccer fans, who complain the the turf is ruined by the concert goers etc.
But frankly, very few acts in Korea actually can pull 40000+ audience, despite what their fans believe.
Korea is not a big concert going culture
Even a top tier act will need a decent percentage of foreign fans flying in.
That's why it is rare.
Swag apart,
I don't get the deal with such large venues, where most of the audience will anyway see the act only on screens, they will be a speck on the stage,
Yes the atmosphere well be great.. but anyway m..

Oh, I just used the list in Wikipedia, but I didn't count the label events with multiple groups since it wasn't a single group headlining. What's the full list?
Search for it, but I think JYJ, Seo Taiji is missing even if it is only Kpop and there are a few non Kpop soloists as well - Cho Pil Young is one..

With the news that NCT 127 will be playing at the Olympic Stadium, that now makes 7 kpop idols/groups who have played there.
- H.O.T. (three times)
- g.o.d.
- EXO
- BTS (twice)
- IU
- NCT 127
Who would you like to see next?
Jamsil main.. That's not the full list. Also not all of them were to 40000+ audience.
In any case the stadium is going to start renovations, so will not be available for at least a couple of years.
And who knows what will be picture of the Kpop industry when it becomes available again.
NCT 127 might be the last Kpop group to perform there for the foreseeable future.
