You should go look at some of the early 2nd gen album packaging... I guess K-pop got better at it

Ripia glad you arrived to balance out the HYBE praise on the forum
I don’t agree with this take but it’s fun
is that really him? noted

Because it was always motivated by sales not by genuine interest in album, that's why it is a fraud. Chinese fans didn't "realize" they ALWAYS knew. They even agreed to not ship certain amounts and throw them into Korean garbage cans just to be able to buy more albums instead of paying for shipping with that money.
That's not fraud. If certain fans want to buy more than one album to support their favorite artist, they can do it. Chinese fans certainly aren't the first to do so, they just happen to have a bigger population. During third gen it was a thing also, maybe even second gen.
Fraud would be like a company buying their own albums.
-
Why do you call is fraudulent? Maybe Chinese fans finally realized that bulk buying that many albums is simply ridiculous. It's about time, I can just imagine the amount of waste that created.

Too many meaningless award shows that even the more recognized ones are affected. Cash grab season is over, time to cancel all but the main award shows

All My Love Is For You, especially the last chorus where Tiffany Taeyeon and Jessica go off

Let’s be real here the 2nd gen girl groups were a mess
JYPE tanked Wonder Girls
Tara had their scandal
Kara had their own issues but were mostly focussed in Japan where they did tell a ton
I’m also pretty sure SM were at the forefront with multiple versions and loads of photo cards which no doubt aided SM sales as well. Whilst also most likely having better distribution than everyone as they ran the game back then.
Kara and 2NE1 still toured to the same level as SNSD in Korea with all three groups maxing out at two dates at KSPO despite SNSD’s fandom power in SK
An established SNSD couldn’t outsell 2 year old EXO yet if they had their debut later against an established EXO they might have done? Makes sense.
SNSD never upgraded from KSPO because SM loves low-balling them (see: their endless Japan arena shows + no shows outside Asia). Nevertheless they sold out the venue at least seven times, including a fanmeet/short concert in 2022. Not sure if the other 2nd gen girl groups come close.
SNSD sales started decreasing after 2011, so nothing surprising there. Again I can only speculate what would happen if they debited later, so let's leave it at that.
-
One of the most overrated stats in kpop is SNSD topping all boy groups in one year for sales (2021) as people just conveniently forget all the context.
They could only do that because the biggest seller of the gen in TVXQ had split and the other biggest bg of the gen in Big Bang never promoted like a normal idol group. The Boys also had an additional version released to push sales even more.
The 3rd gen never had the luxury of BTS and EXO not releasing properly or splitting up.
It says enough about the difference in competition in the 3rd gen that EXO were already dominating the best seller list by 2013
EXO revived physical sales, that's what happened. If we're talking circumstances, SNSD were active when the industry switched to downloads (which tanked sales for all groups in 2nd gen) and girl groups had never proved that they can compete fanbase-wise with boygroups. Who knows how many more albums they would've sold if they debuted in 2014 or 2019, maybe even clinch best seller in one of the years.
But again as people already pointed it out, pointless to compare across generations. Blackpink is clearly more successful than SNSD. If you base your top group of all time on just success and ignoring all "context", then they are the top girl group of all time.

I feel SNSD is being viewed through rose coloured lenses in a lot of the comments in the article. Like a lot of them keep mentioning about how SNSD is super talented. But SNSD was never known or viewed as a talented group.
Only Taeyeon was talented vocally. The rest of the group got by through visuals, catchy songs and nice idol personality. Same as Blackpink today.
I mean there are not many groups that can boast to have a better vocal line that SNSD has/had (five strong singers by industry standards). All you have to do is find some performance (radio, live band or ballad) where there's minimal backtrack. I think that's what the commenters are referring too.
As for the rest your reply well yeah, that's how K-pop (and most of pop music) works. You get recognize first by a combination of songs, charismatic personalities, vocal tones and singing skills. Singing skills being the least important usually.
-
Always love when an older performance gets an official upload. And this one you can clearly hear them singing!

People keep mentioning the SNSD situation in a negative way as if it's not the best situation for an older girl group so far. Which K-pop girl group keeps releasing new music long after their peak and still manage to be relatively successful? Even outside of K-pop that is extremely rare for girl groups.
Of course I wish they did more group activities and even go on tour again, but since Blackpink is still popular they can do so even after this decision.
What they did was smart, gain freedom for their individual careers but still be able to use the group brand under YG, just like SNSD with SM. We know how K-pop labels are with their brands, so this was the best outcome unless you wanted them to fight a years long legal battle to be able to perform under the same name as a group, outside of YG.

Only certain types of people still fight and write paragraphs of speculation. I think most grown up fans have better things to do
