I'm pretty sure it was some years after Gangnam Style got one billion views back in 2012.
When did K-Pop become popular?

It was bubbling for years as a niche hobby in Western countries, but really started gaining speed around 16-17'sih
But Covid is when things started really big and the really, really big numbers started appearing. Bored people, stuck at home, exploring new things and new hobbies.

Gangnam style was a once off
BTS popularized kpop in the West with multiple hit songs. BP widened the market to include female groups.

I think K-Pop was already popular before that song.

It was popular, but it exploded after BTS really went mainstream. I am a person who wears his hobbies on his sleeve proudly, and I know that my conversations about K-Pop had a lot less "What's that?" reactions once BTS took off in 2017. Of course, those people then only knew about BTS, but it was an improvement.

I personally saw B.A.P everywhere before I saw BTS, but i have to say that I didn't know about Kpop really until BTS exploded.
but to be 100% honest, It was B.A.P i first heard of and it was due to that one dude who did an english cover of their song One Shot. But because I didn't understand the language I didn't pay attention. B.A.P's logo was EVERYWHERE.

There were already female groups before BP, such as Girls' Generation.

For me it was when I came across BigBang, B.A.P and BlockB back in like 2017, BTS in the second half of 2017 (almost 2018), but it wasn't until after that it truly became big.
Gangnam style was super huge where I lived, so whenever that song came out I think really helped. But 2020 def blew it out of the waters

I guess it was the English cover that made K-Pop popular. TWICE sang The Feels, which is their first English song, when K-Pop was already popular. Plus the presence of a K-Pop group's logo (in this case B.A.P) was popular at one point in time.
TWICE, BTS, Blackpink, and many other groups sing in both Korean and some English (They sing in some English to get attention I guess).

Depending 'where' the popular comes from right? KPOP was already popular in Asian countries, back when DBSK, SUJU, SNSD, BB and the likes ruled them. All the while JYP is breaking their back trying to enter the US market with WG (poor them honestly). KPOPs started touring in the States and got some niche fans. Not widely known, but it is still slowly building up from there. Psy really gave USA a huge nudge in 2012 and say "hey look, funny guy dancing, its some 'KPOP' genre". Then came in the 3rd gen and it really took off from there.
KPOP was always there. People discovered KPOP depends on the timeline and group(s) they stan. For them, at that moment in time, KPOP becomes 'popular'.
