Since Netflix and other big companies started investing, Kdrama quality is going up

  • Imo, since those big companies started investing, the quality kept increasing. Now even mid tier kdrama have quite a lot of budget and often don't shy to spend a lot of money for some scenes. In the past we saw a lot of kdramas very blatantly choosing the cheap options.

I also think stories and directing is much more diversified in the last few years though it might not be because of these companies

  • It's interesting as I'm of the opposite opinion.

As kdrama gains international corporate attention and more mainstream international integration they have, in my opinion, deteriorated into the ubiquity of modern International "prestige" fare.

Technically perhaps greater in budget with increased prestige. But lacking in the often idiosyncratic charm they once held in my opinion.

I got into Kdramas so long ago to find something different. And found a love of their unabashed melodrama and romances of old told in an unapologetically Korean way.

That certain pull and feeling has been lost in their translation to the International big leagues, in my eyes.

I yearn for kdrama to return to its less sophisticated roots. And find myself dropping modern shows repeatedly to return to older fare.

  • Looking at kdramas now and in the early 2010s, you can feel the difference. Everything is much better with more budget, better scripts, more diverse dramas, and Better written female leads. Netflix is putting Kdramas out there. For a Kdrama to be popular outside Korea now it has to be on Netflix

True, though I think Netflix importance is often exaggerated on Kdrama. A huge part of the market is korea only and they are barely influenced by netflix.

no, if you look at the nominees and winners from the latest Baeksang Arts Awards, (one of the most prestigious dramas/film awards in Korea) most of them are Netflix produced or distributed by Netflix (D.P., Squid Game, Hellbound, Mine, My name, Juvenile Justice, The King's affection, Racket boys, all of us are dead, 2521)

true but I meant market share, with long running dramas having huge presence when they are barely known internationally
