Not a sound engineer myself, but as a songwriter who has worked with producers and sound engineers, I can't tell you enough how important mixing is. It can change the whole song.
I'd check out this YouTube channel if I were you, and you may want to check out some music forums or reddit for better advice than what you'd probably get here.
