Why did korean general public lose interest in the girl groups of jyp?

  • What’s happening? It’s almost like a switch happened and Korea stopped supporting them but why? It’s no wonder jyp is rushing out nmixx but I’m very surprised with itzy the most

  • I think they didn't lost interest in a particular company, it's just that the gp move on to new ggs very fast. They tend to pay more interest in the new, trendy and fresh faces than old ones. It's sad but it is what it is.

  • Number of reasons but the main one is they offer nothing new there's no originality or creativity, we've seen it all before e.g nmixx......

  • Who said they lost interest? Ever jyp groups has a good initial start but later they lose interest because jyp doesn't know how to manage them.

  • Because their groups are boring. No one cares anymore.

Even the new gg seems like an aespa rip off...

  • just my 2 cents, i think twice's GP popularity slowed down ever since they got stopped their cute concept and went into songs like fancy/ the feels. granted, they are definitely still popular (just not TT/ cheer up level) and their fandom is huge (800k+ albums wow). same thing happened to snsd after gee/ oh/ genie era (to a smaller degree) so i dont see it as an issue, they still earn loads for jyp.

as for itzy, the girl crush niche is oversaturated atm with huge groups (blackpink, aespa) which was the concept of their prev comeback, only time will tell if a concept change can win the gp back.

anyhow its really dependent on the songs and jyp isnt making huge hits like before now. rollin' made it big but no one said its because of brave ent or anything like that haha

  • they follow them until they release a bad song which unfortunately itzy did on their first comeback

  • Well jypgg always fall hard in Korea after their rookie days, twice had the longest streak of consistent hits from jyp. Twice changed their sound and are in a stage they don’t need to be making constant hits

Itzy though… only 3 years in and they have already started to fall like this. Even then dd is their only true hit in Korea everything else did good but wasn’t a hit. If you think about it so far it’s is the gg that had appealed to Korea the least

Jyp should have solidified their popularity in Korea, they had the biggest gg hit of 2019 and jyp did nothing. Instead they tried chasing internationally right away.

Look at sm with aespa, you can tell they are trying to get them solidified there, and successfully bc aespa were on Gallup their first year

I wonder if nmixx will get a hit, they’ll chart top 100 that’s for sure but a hit? Jypgg hit it big in their debut or first comeback so we’ll have to see

  • i honestly don't know how jyp managed to ruin two great girl groups

the songs are not the problem I dare say some of their best are their worst performing

so I have no idea ! jyp are idiots that all I have to say

JYPE has garbage tier promotion, bad release schedules and doesnt promote individual members.

It's a consistent pattern. But it's not like most of their peers are doing much better. Esp internationally JYP have BY MILES the number 2 gg and its really not even close so I think their is a lack of care there from JYP, it's like 'ow well' when a song does bad domestically.

  • Like others said twice losing some gp appeal it's natural because 1. change of concept and 2. It's hard to keep being very popular with the gp after so many years, it's happening to the rest of 3rd gen too except bts and bp and rv who are still doing okay.

No idea about itzy, they are still very young so i'd not rule them out yet they can gain the gp back any moment in the future. Maybe queendom will help them if they participate.

Nmixx hasn't debuted yet, there isn't much to say about them lol give them 2/3 years first

  • Lol. I wanted to post about the same thing, especially seeing how in the Februari brand ranking ITZY were nowhere to be found in the Top 30 and only 1 or 2 TWICE members in the 20+ ranking.

Add to that ITZY's declining Korean charting with every new comeback and TWICE's mediocre Korean charting for years now and their abysmal charting with their latest 'Scientist' comeback, and the signs are hard to ignore and clear for anyone to see.

There's a difference with SNSD's trajectory though: even after their digital peak years 2010-2011, SNSD had most of their songs charting at #1 as far as 2015, and SNSD were still the most popular girl group up to 2016 in the eyes of the Korean public. TWICE's song in contrast have consistently been doing average for a few years now, and other groups already surpass TWICE in popularity with the Korean public.

If you want to compare situations, then TWICE right now is more like SNSD in 2016 than SNSD in 2011.

But it's true that girl groups in general have a shorter career lifespan, and the Korean public is less loyal and more fickle when it comes to their favoring of kpop groups.

  • I once dated someone in marketing and he said brands don't retain their value if they change their design or concept too much or too often.

  • Only in Korean charting, in terms of everything lse Twice currently are ahead of SNSD in their prime in almost every aspect so of course JYP has a lack of effort and care for their domestic performance.

Not just Korean charting, also in popularity with the Korean public, in endorsements, in album sales and in international popularity SNSD dominated in a way that TWICE didn't. SNSD were the only girl group that beat all the boy groups in album sales and got a daesang for it, as the only girl group. They were also the number 1 in views and international popularity for years, the position that BP has now.

You're right insofar that kpop has increased a lot worldwide, and that album sales and international popularity of kpop groups right now is easily several times what it was 10 years ago.

If you think it's a good thing that JYP doesnt care about Korean success and popularity or about the TWICE girls individual careers and that JYP should keep doing things like that, then keep believing that, I'm not in the habit of changing people's beliefs.

It's actually worse for Twice than you make out to be compared to SNSD.

SNSD since Gee always had a song in the top 10 of the charts and stayed there for weeks. This lasted until their final CB in 2019 where holiday basically flopped on the charts debuting at like just inside top 20. However it did do well internationally and sakes wise it was their fastest selling album till SM stopped stocking it. That was their 10th year so it was too be expected that there drop off.

Twice meanwhile were already struggling since more and more which didn't last in the charts. Now in their 6th year, 2021, their latest CB flopped hard and was barely able to break the 80s. That is faaar worse than SNSD who were further into their career, had big scandals and kpop was in a transition period where 2g groups were dying off.

Their physical sales are still good but that's not really a fair comparison as physical market is much bigger now. Aespa debut mini outsold all of SNSD Korean albums in one go, it took Twice a few years to beat just best SNSD and they still needed multiple versions to do so.

Public wise Twice are faaaar behind SNSD. SNSD early on were constantly on TV getting high ratings, members were high in demand for TV appearances, lots group and solo cfs, individual member popularity was high including 2 IT girls. Twice meanwhile don't have much individual popularity (Red Velvet members and BP are much more will known), their last group appearance on radio star was one of the lowest ratings in years meanwhile Hyoyeon appeared a few weeks later and she got one of the highest in recent times.

You could even argue the amount of hype among Korean public only SNSD in 2022 are more popular than Twice. Taeyeon is still rocking charts, Yoona is still IT girl plus successful actress, half the members are actresses and even Hyoyeon, the last popular often still gets high ratings on TV shows she appears on.

  • Sones needing to throw up parameters and whataboutism to pretend Twice aren't bigger now overall than SNSD were period. Outselling, streaming, viewing, touring, etc SNSD. Of course you can say Kpop is bigger overall now so that is why Twice metrics are a lot higher, but isn't it also fair to say Kpop was domestically much more GP accepted in SNSD's time compared to now?

JYPE isn't focused on the Korean charts as much as they should and it's because unlike 2nd gen groups like SNSD at a similar stage in their careers comparatively Twice/Itzy had not died off internationally or lost their fandom like SNSD did. They aren't struggling to hit 150-300k sales or dried up touring or have been dropped by their US labels like Girls Gen did so it's a pointless comparison.

JYPE aren't pushing in Korea as much since their groups don't rely on it as much right now.

  • Also want to point out people pretending that SNSD basically dominated all metrics until 3rd gen hit is simply not true. For a decent portion of their career several GG's were doing better in years than them digitally, namely Miss A, T Ara, 2NE1 and Sistar all at some point had years where they comprehensively outcharted SNSD and also they were firmly the number 2 group in Japan behind Kara.

So stop rewriting history and pretending a GG must be 100% dominant every where for their entire career when no GG has ever done that prior. It's not possible.

  • Snsd was not making hits outside of 2009-2011. There songs were doing queendom level in digital charts after that besides some exception that did a bit better or a bit worse

with snsd charting never defined the ngg status, it was always everything else. They kept their name alive by thriving in acting cfs

It’s pretty amazing if you think about it, they were able to stay the most popular gg even with many other gg getting digital hits… the only gg that came close to taking the crown from them was tara before the scandal

The only gg that has this type of thing is bp, even after huge hits from aespa, omg and bg they still were the most popular gg. They keep the, sleeves relevant with fashion and solo endeavors. Though bp are actually making huge hits even when they are older now

  • This is one of the biggest issue in JYPE at one point Twice were every bit as massive in SK as you can be. Dominating digital charts, CF's left and right and just everyone knew them and they were much loved.

But JYP always failed to push and market the members outside of the group so none of the girls ever reached the name recognition and brand power of the likes of Taeyeon, Yoona, Seohyun, etc and this is a massive factor.

When SNSD stopped doing as well domestically as a group Tae' was still doing big songs(even to this day) Yoona was bagging CF's, acting and hosting gigs every year and Seohyun was establishing herself as a decent level actress and this always kept them in some level of consistent success/popularity level.

When Twice fell in charting and public popularity none of the members were promoted or pushed by JYPE so as such domestically they've had nothing to fall back on at all which has made them feel like they have faded even further and faster.

It's a massive difference in the experience and management quality of SM and JYP. To this day SM is pushing and striving to make Winter and Karina stand out as they recognize the potential in the two members most and it's smart, while JYPE utterly failed to make any Itzy member have any form of individual brand power and now they too are starting to fade and suffer the same fate as Twice and Wonder Girls before that.
