My girlfriend said that she reads/watches BL
But to be honest, I feel repulsed by it
Why would she tell me that... it feels too TMI"

    - I look at them but I don't say it ㅋㅋㄱ
    - I went to an all-girls middle and high school and 50% of the girls around me watch it
    - The market for BL's stories is indeed really big but I don't tell anyone except for the people close to me
    - I look at it but I don't say it... But we talk about it among close friendsㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ nowadays, dramas, webtoons and animes are all so diverse so
    - I can't differentiate whether it's a lot or not but if you look at web short stories or webtoons, their popularity is no joke so uhm... it's not that I don't read it but maybe not in front of everyone?

    - I read them but saying that you read them is impressive
    - Me too I would hate it if my boyfriend told me that he looks at GL
    - I've never been into web short stories or webtoon so I never read any BLs but looking around, it is way~~~~~~~~~y more common than I thoughtㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ"

    original post: here

    1. In my school, 1/3 kids watch it

    2. I've never read any up until I was 37. But there are so many people promoting it on TheQoo that I started reading it and now... but thinking back, in my middle and high school, the % of kids reading BLs were about 20%?

    3. 7 out of 10 of my friends read them, they even talk about it now

    4. I don't read it...

    5. Me too, I've been into sports BL recently so I looked up other BLs too. But why would you tell anyone ㅜ

    6. If I think back about my school days, if you fangirled on idols, you most probably read it but I haven't read any since I became an adult

    7. I would say 2/10 friends read it?

    8. Me and everyone around me read it

    9. Around 50%?

    10. There are a f*cking lot of people who read it but don't tell anyone so you can't rely on asking people around you. Especially for webtoons, so many people read them

  • Is liking BL correlated to sexual openness? I thought it was just a hobby like enjoying romantic comedies. Now I know fujoshies exist and I don't necessarily like them but is it really like that for most people?

For me it’s quite obvious. For one, two male characters are on level playing grounds in terms of bodily anatomy. Even when you make one “weak” they’re still on level playing field that’s a very powerful motivator.

Apart from BL if you see shipping in other media it’s also because male characters are just better written and have more chemistry than with the insipid boring female ones :pepepizza:

There’s a lot of studies on what attracted women to BL, it’s less do with homosexuality of itself and more to do with relationships that just feel more “real” and “acceptable” or “safe” to consume because of power dynamics.

  • I'm not sure how ''common'' it is,but from what I can tell the main BL audience are women and gay men

what is BL? Is it a kdrama or something?

    BL stands for Boy Love.

It's a drama genre that features boy x boy couples. If I'm not mistaken the first countries that popularized it are China and Thailand, but in recent years it seems to be hitting off in Korea too.

  • I enjoy BL (and GL for that matter) because the character dynamics are typically better written than a lot of straight romances. I also appreciate that they tend to more heavily rely on some of my favorite fiction tropes (enemies to loves, mutual pining, etc).

  • I don’t know if its common, cause most of my female friends are not into it except one.

I tried it, several tbh and its not for me, I enjoy movies like Call Me By Your Name or Moonlight more than BL.

I read that some think it has better dynamics. I don’t really think so, especially not in Anime. Even though both are boys, in all the BL I saw there was always this masculine vs feminine dynamic going on almost very stereotypical, starting with the physics.

You have the typical more masculine guy he is drawn taller, physically more stronger and their whole persona is more masculine as well and than the one who seems like a girl’s replacement, he is a boy but drawn much shorter, looks more androgynous appears to be more shy, passive etc. They often have to be pushed or saved by the more masculine boy. Tbh their depiction isn’t much different than how girls are portrayed in many Animes.

Which I personally find quite weird cause most BL stories are written/drawn by women. As I always assumed, it’s a way to depict romance or comedy making it safer for girl’s since they can detach themself from a female character.

The only thing I agree with is that as a couple they are written better, but that’s simply because there is no gender conflict. Both boys so they go through the same experience there is a way better and realistic understanding of each other because of that.

Which I admit and with many Animes the Boy/Girl dynamic can seem a bit to stereotypical.

I also think it’s interesting that I hear the statement “women write men more realistic “ mostly from women. Tbh I haven’t met a guy who ever said that or read many men saying it tho. So I’m not quite sure if that’s the case than. What I think is that women write men in the way they want a men to be so as a fellow women you feel more attached to that.

Anyway I don’t think a good writer has a gender. Some people are better in writing nuanced characters with depth and others not.

That being said, I think live action BL are a little better since the guys feel less like a girl’s replacement.

  • I don't know why people always make BL out like it's some taboo thing that should be hidden. W/W and M/M should be normalized as much as M/W fiction and I don't think it matters what sexuality or gender is reading it so long as it's not hurting anyone.

Well put. The only time I dislike and bl or gl stories is when the fetishize. Otherwise bl and gl are really not much different from het genres.

Same. Like the dynamics or problematic elements exist in MF as much as they do in MM. people like reading problematic elements in romance for some reason and that’s a SEPARATE issue to whether thats BL or not. We can argue whether that’s right or wrong but that’s not really the point. When we label everything fetishization with no nuance that shows a lack of any interest in actually learning about why people are the way they are. Stories are just stories. There are some GREAT BL stories that are beautiful just like MF. You need to look for the good ones not just paint everything with a broad brush and dismiss it.

  • Yeah you should definitely do more research on topics before commenting!

I’m often right so I don’t know what you mean.

Btw we agree in many points here looking at the other replies you made in this Thread. I just expressed myself a bit differently.

Ever since you decided to hate me, you are really trying hard to disagree with me or act as if you are not understanding what I’m saying… don’t worry it won’t turn you to whatever you think I am just because we agree here and than. That’s not how it works. ;-)

    Have a nice day :*

  • girls are into BL and guys are into lesbian porn lol so

I would find it better if its not labeled. Let it just be called romance.

I think that’s why some think it’s a fetish, cause if you want to watch romance, why specifically search for a specific genre especially if its not your sexual orientation. Just watch whatever.. a good story is a good story !

  • Glad you agreed you need to do more research and will educate yourself better!

  • I would find it better if its not labeled. Let it just be called romance.

Unfortunately for some people it really is a fetish because uhm if you look at for example Japanese BL manga it's just ew (not necessary just BL, all sorts of manga but yeah) ...it romanticizes rape so much, most of the people would rather avoid it altogether....there are some cute BL anime out there but if you try reading manga, it's just one big nope :eyes:

And then not everybody wants to read BL romance, same as people who don't want to read hetero romance so I don't think labeling itself is bad, just the awful stuff witch makes a bad reputation for the whole genre should be gotten rid of

  • I just watch because it’s cute. I never thought about sexuality because it’s about love.

    But…

So you are saying a bl lovestory is fake? Written by females? That homosexual couples are not like that?
