Why is there a 4th gen?

Because kpop fans are weird.
-
Why was there a "1st gen" to begin with
Not sure. I've never heard koreans calling H.O.T "1st gen" in 1999.

It'd be interesting to know who started this whole generational mess.

Gen in kpop exist to make newer groups feel more fresh and put an expiration date on idol life

Some don't wanna hear this, but the K-pop industry saw the opportunity to finally expand into western territories like LATAM, America, Canda, and Europe once they saw the results BTS was getting through sheer demand. They'd tried in 2nd gen with multiple famous groups and idols (Rain, CL, BoA, Wonder Girls, SNSD) and it failed. PSY was a two-hit wonder, and isn't even a k-pop idol.
These newer groups out here getting signed to American record labels not even 2 years into their careers, some even earlier. The industry operates fundamentally differently now: western success is now a benchmark of a K-pop's popularity. In 3rd gen, it was cool if your faves won or were nominated at a western award show. Now 4th gen stans will use "Grammy eligibility" or "Grammy museum" as a fanwar flex. The mindset has changed.
There's your answer.

I feel like this is a myth perpetuated by 3rd gen fans. 1st and 2nd gen idol groups and soloists continue to have influence in the industry in various areas (acting, variety, hosting, performing). Just look at "My mom is an idol". The ratings it brought in were comparable to Knowing Bros.

the same reason there was a 1st gen, 2nd gen and 3rd gen I guess

Back in the 2000’s we just called everything Hallyu Wave.
This generation crap is some new age bs newer stans came up with. Cause when SNSD was out no one was referring to them as 2nd gen. It’s weird.
Like when does a generation end and another one starts? After 4 years? 5 years? 10 years? Like SNSD (2007) is apparently 2nd gen. But a group from 2016 is 3rd gen. Then a group from 2020-22 is 4th gen?
The math doesn’t add up and doesn’t make sense.

It looks like it's time to bring out the chart again:
-
convenience
50's music, 80's, 10's are easy ways to identify important artists and styles
same for gens in kpop
-
huh I stan pretty evenly across 3rd and fourth gen then.
