If the Aespa illusion ever gets broken like Twice's was, they are screwed

Korea used to love Twice, we all knew that. However, they only knew them for their cute concepts and considered them to be talented. The first illusion was broken when Twice stopped doing cute concepts and their largely teenager fanbase grew up and left them, I imagine it's very risky for aespa cause they are only known for singing about naevis and kwangya. The second was the talent illusion, my discussion here isn't if Twice is talented or not, but after that disastrous Momo encore the truth is koreans think they aren't and have left them in droves. They felt embarrassed a group that old could have an encore that bad. Currently Korea thinks aespa are talented, but they don't even sing live on their stages and their encores e performances in general are heavily doctored, at some point it seemed like SM was ultra scared of even giving them an encore after a win and skipping shows where they were going to win the trophy and therefore have to perform an encore. And although they have some strengths, they are clearly not up to pair to older SM artists. Karina is the main dancer but she seems to be one of the weakest main dancers out there. Clips of her dancing poorly on knowing bros and mama have blown up but mostly on places where international fans are the majority, they have largely been hidden from koreans. On GOT, Karina was left out of the dance break, clearly showing that they considered her gap to Boa, Hyoyeon and Seulgi too big to trust her into doing it. For now Koreans loved aespa, think they were flawless, but 5 years ago that used to be Twice and look where they are now. They have even tolerated them focusing excessively on western fans over them, unlike Itzy, but I also wonder for how long.

korea is very much aware karina isn’t the dancer of the century lol and aside from pann they do not give a fuck. dancing has never been super important in kpop anyways

aespa nail their encores and that’s enough. twice got a bad rep due to their encores not because they lipsynced. aespa are genuinely great singers they’re not going to get dragged for their abilities.

izone lipsynced their whole career and they did just fine i’ve never seen anyone korean shit on their singing because they do well at their encores

thanks for the essay and your concerns. Nobody saying Karina is the greatest natural dancer ever, sensible mys known that Karina being a good dancer because of her hardwork. Aespa encores was being the event last year, even non fans and antis waiting for the clips to drop and the results everybody praising their vocals - they are safe in that part. YYJ who is aespa main producers in very much loved by Koreans, so they are safe too in that part. Karina is praised for her visual center literally perfect to a T and being all rounder. Winter is second coming of taeyeon (do you get what I mean). Giselle rap part in zoo is praised by knets and in 1 day the cuts reached more than 1 m views. SM just need to showcased her skills more. One thing that I'm afraid is Koreans still has stigma with chinese members especially with yiren scandal. So fingercrossed Sm could keep ningning in Sm and treated her well, and they'll be fine.

In therms of good music groups like itzy is way much better and comes from a big company with more or less the same reach. I'm not fan of both but I give itzy some credit, at least their music won't make me want to run away.

If SM fix aespa music in the next years they can live on their fame. Unlike boy groups, gg fandom ain't much loyal. W bgs SM can release literally the song of a cat dying fans will buy it out and even gonna praise, with ggs is different.

I hope they fix aeapa music, so these girls can live up to their fame and not suffer the amount of hate they suffer rn.

If you honestly think the talent perception of Twice was some new revolution that caused a shift you're sorely mistaken and have clearly only started following kpop recently.

The amount of scrutiny and attacks on Twice's talents and vocals from debut onwards was crazy high and more than any other GG you can find in that regard. Go to any translation site and look at 16/17Twice articles, that's what you'll mainly find. SK didn't care as the music was catchy and they were seen as having the best visuals.

There's many people that shit on Itzy's music too. Look at the reception to Icy and Mafia.

Aespa's music is quintessential kpop, bold and experimental.

It might not be for everyone, but that's okay.

They also released an album with really solid B-sides which was lauded by the majority of people. So if they get anything close to RV or Fx's discography they'll be set.

Twice took a hit not from teenagers walking away, but from the uncle/military fans. Without Jihyo and then Momo getting exposed, and Chaeyoung kinda, with the broader implication sitting there that they all probably date, some of their man fans would still be happily living their unviolated fantasy of being the only fox in the Twice hen-house.

If anything their music has become more appealing since then. Less bubblegum and attracting their most diverse audience. It's the men who had spent years pondering which Twice member would be head wife who flounced. And good riddance.

Its all about hitsongs and if normal Koreans know you and like you.

Nobody care if TWICE cannot sing. Normal Koreans dont. They see pretty girls and sing along Cheer Up and theyre happy.

No. I mean yes and no.

Yes military fans find new pretty girls to dream about and new ggs to follow.

But thats not what happens on charts. If TWICE music now really that much better than old TWICE music you would see on charts. Top 10. Allkill. Number 1 on charts for long time. But no. TWICE songs doing bad on charts for more years now. Not very, very bad. But still bad. So many other gg songs and groups doing better than TWICE now.

Uncle and military fans is like you say FANS. But charting is not fans, or not just fans. It's normal Koreans.

It's normal Koreans and not just military fans that have moved on from TWICE to new hot groups that become talk of the town. Brave Girls and Oh My Girl and Aespa and whatever other groups become hot with songs that normal Koreans like to play.
