Bsb was definitely huge but the traditional way - radio, TV, etc..
Bts is big but they got the internet.. Ofc they also have tv and radio but there’s a hurdle there esp in US and Europe.

I only know of bsb though my mom and even she just heard of them in passing. They weren't really huge in india so there is that. Most people in asia might have heard of bsb but if you were to ask them a single song by them they would have no clue. I think the same could be said about bts in america. bsb was during a time when globalization was still a process and social media wasn't available to connect fans to artists across the world. I would say globally bts is probably more popular but they did have the advantage of social media.

Both groups have met up and expressed desire to collab, its kinda cute

BSB was in the era where the media was controlled by the west. Being the it group for boybands at the time, BSB had the advantage to be in the radio, tv, magazines and people really don’t have a choice like now. They were famous in SEA, I remember knowing their names and tts because they are every where in the media.
Now I’m fortunate enough to be in the BTS era as well and I felt that the parameters are really different. While BTS don’t have media, they have social media which they used wisely to showcase not only their talents but their personalities. And here BTS excelled because other acts have the same social media advantages but they are not as successful as BTS.
Where am I going with this? I don’t know, just sharing my thoughts. I really think both are from different eras so it’s really hard to say. Both both are great.

Perhaps it would be helpful to compare their touring figures. Does anyone have total concert attendance numbers for both groups?

That won’t be fair to BTS. Bsb still go on tours even till today

Ah yes, that's a fair point; it does appear that BSB is still holding concerts. Maybe it would be instructive to consider attendance for each group's "peak" touring years then.
For Backstreet Boys, I'm assuming this is 1999 to 2001. For BTS, I'd say 2017 to 2019.

To be fair the two eras are completely different so it’s hard to compare.
The social media wasn’t nearly as big during Backstreet Boys so they couldn’t take advantage of that but globally they were huge because they first got popular in England. They took over pretty much all of the west.
The only competition BSB really had was *NSYNC during boyband peak in the late 90’s to early 2000’s and they basically went head to head on TRL charts pretty much every week except when Aaliyah died.
