Though the reverse happens as well (some homophobic people will hate sexual and romantic content involving the same sex regardless of gender, and there are certain types of people who fetishize gay men), but I don't think it's as common.
The girl group would be more successful. A boy group would probably get a lot of hate while a girl group could play it off as a sexy concept.

Well if we even just take the case of Bibi vs Holland we can see it evidently there. Bibi is somewhat famous AS A SINGER and even gets like tons of endorsements with huge brands, even while using lyrics about being with another woman. Holland is a lot less obvious about being gay and he just isn’t comparable in acceptance and he ONLY said he was gay, he doesn’t make it a huge topic musically.
