I mean what else was it that made them gain fans? They went viral for their music

Yes

Music, performances and good looks. This recipe mixed with some other ingredients is what made them popular!

They were and still are dragged for their visuals though.

music + online content + performances

Yes. Their music, performances and looks blended so well they brought in droves of fans. Their performances on award shows always brings in a tonne of fans.

It was part of the reason. It's not the sole reason. Another reason was their personality and online presence. A lot of the members just have a presence that makes you want to like them. And I think they were one of the first groups to really utilize SNS properly to connect with their fans. But at the end of the day if you don't like their music there are plenty of other groups in kpop that have good personalities and good looks that you could get into. So music definitely played a big part.

Partially. But good marketing and army themselves also did a lot.
And this applies to their old music only.

Sugar, spice and everything nice
Plus the Chemical Bang

Yeah but that's bc people are finding reasons to drag them.
Taehyung, Jungkook, and Jin are obviously stan attractors for their visuals. You can add Jimin to the list as well bc many people find him quite charming. Others are also handsome but I think the vocal line has more general appeal.

only the least attractive members.visual members like v and jin got praised a lot and went viral for their looks.

yes. I really like their discography. And so do the armys I know in real life.

Yes, music is the biggest reason they went popular. Everyone saying otherwise are just kidding themselves.

Partly. But they were also very lucky to be in the right place at the right time, and crucially had a company who knew how to take advantage of it (even if they didn't understand why it happened and had to apologize for bragging that they could send endless BTS's off their conveyor belt).
Making in-roads into western markets just as 1D were clearly leaving the building was super advantageous, along with a lot of minor things coming into play such as Exo-l's pissing off Directioners to the extent that they started hyping up BTS just to get them back. Also the fact that Directioners in general became masters of strategy which the new international Army fanbase capitalized on. Army's really have a lot to thank Directioners for.
Then BTS had some good public friendly songs like Idol, Mic Drop, DNA, Fake Love. I think the Mic Drop remix was one of the best things to happen to BTS. (And is another sign of their company being willing to reach out and collaborate, in comparison to a company like YG which did not even bother to return Steve Aoki's calls.)
It's a shame that part of their success is still artificial because if they'd stayed making good title tracks they could have been the biggest band in the world convincingly. No need for anyone to zombie stream or mass buy or donate because it would happen effortlessly the way it does for Adele, Justin, Ariana, Ed Sheeran, Drake, Dua, etc. But because their songs are trash they are mostly just being tolerated as a novelty by the general public, and the worst part is that BTS seem baffled about why they don't have Grammy yet. They have songs in their history that are definitely Grammy deserving, but not Dynamite, not Butter, certainly not Permission to Dance. I wish someone could course correct them and explain that they won't get that all-important Grammy with a cheesefest teenybopper anthem. It's frustrating when the talent is there, and it's insulting that they think we prefer this crap.
Tldr? Yes, partly.

So One Directioners are partly responsible for their success as per this post.

I'd say yes. Up until and including Dynamite they put serious effort into their discography.
