  • Not everyone gonna apply hypergamy, but the majority that applied it has a kind of mindset that their future life will be miserable if they didn't marry someone that is superior to them. Lee Hyori herself is already has a secured future because of her career, so what she needs is just a simple thing of happiness, so that why she choose the man she thinks deserves to spend her life with.

  • The concept of hypergamie is old-fashioned and mostly due to sexism. It’s not like every women wants to have a rich guy. It’s just that women haven’t had the opportunities men had so they had to marry someone with a stable life. In my country hypergamie is not really a thing since most women can provide for themselves. Lee Hyori is also an example. She achieved enough by herself to not need someone who provides her the stability (in a monetary sense and social sense).

Another take: In countries like Korea (more in Japan) it is expected by the family that the woman marries someone nice and well standing and gets pregnant in order to stop working and have kids. Only someone above her socially and financially would be able to support two non-working people. Sometimes the woman starts to do part time but it is more or less expected. In Korea it is not that strong but in Japan it is still a thing and I have had friends who ran into problems with their family in law due to that
