    Context:

She's a new Thai idol that was announced to debut in K-pop. Her family are entertainers/celebrities and openly royalist. They support the monarchy - Thai people are saying her family is supporting a 'dictatorship'. You can read more about Thailand's political situation to get why this is a problem.

She stated that her idol in life is her father. Her father is considered to be problematic. It created a huge buzz because of it.

Comments under the post range from valid criticism, to saying 'aren't K-pop companies adding foreign idols to attract, not repel fans from their home country like in thi scase?', to, "are they trying to attract foreign ultranationalists", to "#DICTATOR_OUT", to "how can the company be so careless, ignorant, etc.".

    It's not good.

  • few things before people start to bash poor girl

1st - Thailand still has druggie king who recently went back to Germany after being sure that there are no more big protests from Thai people

2nd - What this girls dad do even if he would beat someone shouldn't be a moment when you point fingers at innocent kid and bash her for her fathers sins

3rd - Her dad might be good and sweet for her, her mom, their family, friends, etc. so there is no way that she would say anything bad about him

From what I understood by talking to my Thai friend - it's not just her father. It's her whole family.

It's not as simple as you're making it out to be.

  • yes but still her family even if it's about her parents, it's not like kid can decide what kind of politic view her parents have - other kind of family are already relatives which ain't as close as parents

they might for example be one of those families that great grandfather, grandfather, then father become military members

or had close ties to military because of business

    and that's all

  • I find it interesting how this situation is happening.

Thai people: her whole family is problematic and are causing harm, her father has done a lot of bad things and here's just some of them + explanation why they're problematic and why what she's said is problematic

K-pop stans who have seen exactly two pictures of Sitala a day ago and thought she was pretty: LEAVE MY SMALL CHILD ALONE, SHE'S INNOCENT EVEN THOUGH SHE REAPED ALL THE BENEFITS OF HER FAMILY'S POLITICAL CONNECTIONS AND ALLEGED HARM THEY CAUSED TO OTHERS

Yeah, hard pass. She should've just sat there and ate her food. Instead she said her idol is her father, who is a much hated person in her home country accused of really bad things.

Not saying she's guilty of his alleged crimes because she isn't. But she's extremely privileged and came off as shameless? Living in a bubble? Ignorant? IDK, but she shouldn't have even mentioned it tbh. I'm sure it's hard having a father who is a polarizing figure. He was v hated in his home country. I know he could've been a great father to her and a great person to HER. But he wasn't a great person.

If people from her country are trying to tell us why this is problematic, at least what we can do is listen. You don't have to agree with it but we can't speak over real life issues as serious as these.

  • ok we need to clarify one thing

because kprofiles site says she is daughter of actor, and singer - turned politician, who passed away in 2020

she even posted something like "I wish that heaven would have visiting hours"

even if people would call that he probably is in hell not in heaven

should we really blame kid for missing her dad?

  • If your father was, let's say, an alleged war criminal. Would you be posting about missing him after he passed?

We have a woman in my country who is like that. Her father was a confirmed war criminal. He died and got away with his crimes. I'm not saying Sitala's father is a war criminal, by the way. But he had alleged victims, many of them. Anyway, this woman was roasted, rightfully so, for talking about how wonderful her father was. Families of his victims were appalled and shocked.

Would you be publicly posting about missing him? How tone deaf can she be, tbh? She can miss him. But she, like I said, reaped the benefits of his status, had the best opportunities because of what he did while other people's children were murdered, the least she can do is stay quiet publicly.

Either you're intentionally choosing to not realize this or you're looking at it the wrong way. IDK what to tell you. When you have many Thai people all over all sorts of social media trying to explain how serious this is, rationalizing it as "should we really blame kid for missing her dad?" is really a weird way to undermine their suffering and struggles.

Actually I would like to just get full intel about things her dad did. Like did himself, not doing something like performance for military. Or saying he supports General X.

If there is post list of things like that online, I might change my first opinion.

Okay then, come back to here after you look it up and we can talk! People have started posting a lot of things in English, but not a lot of resources have actually been translated so I can only provide you with things that have been said so far, like all the posts I linked above.

Most notable situation mentioned so far was closing the airport from what I understood.

  • I'm trying to learn a bit on my own. Just viewing history on wiki it seems like there indees was military coup in 2014 which was like a continuation of military coup in 2008. It also says that coup happened because countrys economy was falling apart.

But it seems like they have those coups there very often... And it happens in each 10 years or even more regular.

They've closed airport in 2014 after/during that last coup.

The thing is that all people involved in are normal military, royal military, and monarchy aka king.

So we can assume that either king is like a president there and dictator/military guy is like prime minister in comrade style. Or one of them is pawn in the hand of other.

So it seems similar to what Chinese celebs have either you support CCP to be able to perform on stage or if not then you are banned/imprisoned/disappear.

It's really hard thing to discuss, and not that easy.

  • Idols might not be politicians or should have to talk about every political matter but they are still public people with a role model function. Thai people have every right to be appalled by such a person debuting.

  • The king is a real dictator. He always flees to Germany when shit hits the fan and does really crude things here. Just look up how he treats his mistresses...

Speaking of that, wasn't there talk of a Vietnamese idol debuting? Did that ever happen?

  • whoa, now that’s not some innocent child people are making her out to be.

It’s weird how it’s either, “ she/he has no control over this stuff “ or “ she’s/he’s capable and has her/his own mind and right to speak on matters “ within kpop. Whatever aids their narrative I guess

On one hand you don't choose your family and aren't responsible for their actions, on the other you're responsible for your own actions and it's clear she lived a life of privilege and doesn't have enough self-awareness to realize she should've stayed freaking quiet about her father if she wanted to have any chance to debut. It's impossible for me to sympathize with her because it's clear she's proud of him and therefore, she's proud of the things she did. Then again, she's a royalist and publicly went to those pro-dictatorship, anti-democracy protest so...

People are saying her father took away the dreams of many while she's going to another country to live her dream without any worries and stay privileged and uncaring towards the suffering. A bad look.

  • the only thing I can empathize with is her being raised into said ideologies all her life, families can mold their kids into replicas. But yeah, sadly this ain’t it.

That's really true, but then again she's been living away from them for years apparently and she still hasn't realized that at least she shouldn't publicly say she idolizes her father, which makes me believe she's not ashamed of their actions, beliefs, her own beliefs, nor does she feel guilty about it.

Deprogramming takes a lot of work, that's for sure.
