Do you think that children shouldn't be allowed to watch "politically incorrect" stuff?

  • I'm talking about cartoons, animated movies etc...

Like do you think they can affect children in a negative way?

Well... I did watch some stuff like that as a child.

And I think they were politically incorrect even by 2000's standard.

I remember it as if I didn't get what was wrong with some of the stuff.

Like that one part of Aristocats, where the Siamese cat is playing piano with chopsticks and saying something stereotypical.

I remember not seeing what was wrong with it.

Well... I remember that as a child, I had some assumptions about Asians and used to draw Chinese people in a racist way.

I do also remember classmate saying "Chinese people have eyes like this" and having her eyes almost closed.

But I'm not blaming Aristocats for it.

I do remember realizing that some Disney movies had racist parts, when I was looking at stuff on the internet.

I do remember when I was a bit younger and they talked about how the Pippi Longstocking book used the N-word. (Like the part where it is mentioned which people Pippi's father is the king of.)

And teachers were saying stuff like "It has the N-word in it, but it is not okay to use."

I do remember that I used the N-word as a child.

But as I grew older I was like "this word is wrong to use." and remember correcting my grandmother, when she used that word.

Well... sometimes I have read old children's books, and been like "Well... that wouldn't fly today." at some parts.

    And also cringed at it.

I know that in one part of the Moomin books, it pretty much sounds like it glorifies smoking. (even though I don't think it would make children smoke.)

I do remember when teachers were being like "smoking is bad and very unhealthy."

And I actually was very "anti-smoking" back then.

I do remember that some of my classmates who were taught "smoking is bad and unhealthy", ended up becoming smokers as teens.

I'm not going to blame those cartoons and books for how I was as a child though.

I don't know why I was like that.

  • They should be supervised while they watch politically incorrect media. The supervisor(s) should have a conversation with the child(ren) during and/or afterwards.

"And they escorted her to a prison cell..."

    Yep.

The thing is that a lot of great children's media is old. From a different time, with different values and perceptions.

I remember being a kid and reading Oliver Twist, and saying to my my much older sister at the time, "This whole Fagin character is racist, right?"

I somehow had that realisation at the time, but I think a lot of children might internalise that kind of stereotype. Hell, not even kids.

But that doesn't mean that children would get no value from reading Charles Dickens, right?

  • It really depends but I think it's better to always watch together when it's very small kids and in case something comes up, it should be explained but parents not always have so much time so idk it's tricky

  • it can't be avoided so it's more about raising them with good beliefs/morals so that even if they do end up watching that kind of stuff, they know how to separate what's in the show/books/etc and their own views on things. my parents always had firm views when I was a kid and made sure I wouldn't be influenced by stuff I watched by having conversations about it. so I guess it just depends.
