  • Africa is a continent though? Each country has an individual economy, and each of these economies are at different points of development.

That point is already addressed in the video though?

Whenever people discuss macro economics and investing, it's common to prefer to region. Europe are often discussed together, and not individually by country since they are interconnected and easily influence each other. Africa as a whole is similar to Europe than it is to China. The only exception to these discussion is US, India, China because these countries are big enough both population and in size that their economy is not as interlink with their neighbor rise and fall.

Did you just compare Europe who looks like a speck next Afric in size ??? Africa is bigger than the US and china in both population and size also the reason the news refer to Europe's economy as whole because the continent uses the same currency which isn't the case when we talk about Africa so talking about the African economy as whole doesn't make sense

I think the point made is that its on its way to the status.. hence the title...

  • neither was China or India at one point in time

Well yeah but I think their point is more comparing one country to an entire continent. There have been many unfied China's but never a unified African continent. Saying Africa will become economically huge in the future is like saying Asia will become huge in the future whereas if anything economic booms only favor certain states as seen in history(China is the only Asian country truly rivaling the USA rn economically even if other states in Asia like India are doing well). so going by the title it would be better if they specified which African country they think would be the next China in terms of being an economic superpower.

I said from macro economic and investing point of view, we see Africa more like Europe and not China. The reason is simple: Europe is a continent with many countries, political systems and language. They are different but do share similarities in some some aspects of their cultures due to proximity. Europe also has smaller countries that due to proximity, can affect one another economically more easily than they can affect US or China. In that aspect, Africa is more aptly compare to Europe than China. China is one country with one political system. They are big enough as one country that the economy of nearby countries does not GREATLY affect them. (Some affect is inevitable due to the nature of global trading practices).

Africa as a whole has similar population to China. They both sit around 1.4B. The reason the news mentioned Europe together is not because they share the same currency. The currency is not the cause, but the result of Europe realizing that their economies are interdependent. The UK is always discussed together with Europe even though they always use pounds and not Euro. In the world of investment, we prefer to regions more often than individual country.

People been speculating the rise of Africa for a while now. They have all the factors and poised for economy explosion. But people compare Africa to China because as people we can only rely on history to make prediction, and China is the most recent example. It’s not a perfect fit, but it a start somewhere. But let’s not forget to recognize how our comparison fall short. People rarely make prediction based solely on country because it extremely hard to do. Predict the direction of a whole continent is a bit easier, but not exactly a walk in the park either. That is why talking about African economy as a whole make sense because we are looking from a 10,000 foot pole. You can go into more details and individual country but at this point - what’s the point when there so much unknown?

I understand the difference now thank you for your input.

Once again china and Africa can't be compared because one China is country and two like i said previously the day Africa flourish economically is the day France and the US leaves us alone, till this day my country still really on economical exchange with Europe , Africa isn't united the way you think it is

This is spot on that's exactly what I'm trying to explain we can't compare a country to a continent

I already addressed the first elephant: China is a country and Africa is not.

Second, I never said Africa is united. The countries in Africa is interdependent. You don't have to be united to be interdependent.

Third, I think you missed my point. Comparing Africa to China is not the same as saying Africa will be like China. Comparing is just the basis to project the future. We look at different macro and population "marker" to predict the future. Africa as a whole may rise higher than China or never realize their full potential. We don't know that. But one thing is clear, the economies within Africa will rise. To what extent and how much, we won't know.

Various population models have already predict that Africa will be the most populous continent by 2050 where, if continuing current trend, global population will peak at 10B-11B. They also will be more heavily skewed with younger labor force compare to other continents. One country within Africa cannot be compare to China, but Africa as a whole with their population size and resources available, is worth discussing. Because they have "potential".

  • In the US they lump Asians into one category, yet lumping Africa into one category here makes a bit more sense considering most are of the same race and of similar historical post-colonial background

Once again talking about Africa as whole country doesn't make sense simply because Africans aren't united and some African are still dealing with hunger and internal issues
