What is your opinion on groups engaging in queerbaiting fanservice while also showing support for lgbtq+?

  • I was inspired by discussion in another thread yesterday. A lot of groups these days show support for the lgbtq+ community, but Kpop is also Kpop with the obligatory shipping and groups doing fanservice. Do these actions contradict each other? Are companies encouraging both of these things?

  • Showing support for LGBT is openly saying “I support gay people” or openly donating or supporting LGBT organizations…not implied stuff nor rainbows on their shoes. Not some “everyone deserves rights” type broad support.

    Unless they have explicitly said it. Idc about it.

    And I don’t think idols have been that open other than very few. Which is in line with their queer baiting as well.

  • people use the term queer baiting too freely. it's only used to refer to people using queer content to attract people who feel under represented in entertainment. assuming they're doing it because they know queer people want/need it would be cynical. also, it's sad and a bit worrying, but girl kissing girl content (just using an example) isn't just directed towards bi and gay girls. guys also watch it. same with the kind of stuff boy bands do. that stuff attracts fujishis. there are waaay more straight people who want to "indulge" in gay content from the opposite sex than actual queer people (7% of the world) engaging in the content. so assuming they're doing it for the lgbt community doesn't add up when you consider the statistics.

    :yesr::yesr::yesr:

  • idk when this kind of fan service started to be called queerbaiting, since they were always just fan service imo. it has happened for decades and decades and just now people are giving it this name.

    this kind of things are made to appeal to their female (or male, if it's a GG) audience, not gay audience. something similar happens with all those BL animes and mangas for example. they're made for the female and straight audience mostly.

    the majority of their fans and supporters are straight anyway, so the queerbaiting narrative doesn't make sense for me much.

  • I mean... what kind of support are we getting? Really? Are they donating money to any LGBT+ causes? Are they openly inviting the community to their work? Are they at least openly supporting us and joining our fights?

    Cause saying dubious things, or doing suggestive hand signs, or saying they love EVERYBODY or wearing a little rainbow, are not really supporting something.

    I personally don't really expect anything from idols or their companies except good music. But I don't illude myself thinking me and my faves are actually on the same team. :wellr:

  • First there’s a cultural difference. So unless the idols themselves come out to say that they are queer baiting, I won’t jump to conclusions

    For me it’s more fan service than queer baiting. Their target is 99.9% straight people

    But according to western stan twitter, straight kpop fans don't exist and skinship is indisputably an indicator of being gay :/ :melon_think:

  • Honestly I have no idea what is and isn't considered queerbaiting in kpop and as a queer person myself I really don't care. Imo I think it's a good thing at times like

    help normalize lgbt relationships in the still very conservative Korea but I've seen people even complain about lgbt themed mvs saying that they're queerbaiting. I mean I get not liking the over the top fanservice that is just shipper bait but don't you think there can be some good to all this?
