3.5 Unique Ways BTS became the biggest digimon group of 3rd gen.

  • What put BTS over the top is their ability to:

    • chart b-sides with above-average longevity, simultaneously
      • Having multiple albums with extremely high digital scores
    • chart 3-6 singles at the same time, for YEARS at a time
    • chart songs for 70 weeks+

Point #1: Having high download numbers for b-sides wasn’t unique by the time they debuted, but their turning point in this aspect was the LY: HER album, when Go Go and Mic Drop charted for 29 and 25 weeks, respectively. Ever since, multiple b-sides from TEAR, ANSWER, PERSONA, and 7 charted for more than 20 weeks, and a select few more than 30. That’s highly uncommon for groups now, and even in the past, the biggest b-side wouldn’t last this long unless it were promoted as a follow-up song.

1a: Pinballing of point #1, having several albums with high cumulative digital scores (downloads era and digital points era) is another thing that puts them over the top. This is one thing that is common among other top digital groups (EXO, BB, TWICE, 2NE1, etc.)

Point #2: This isn’t that uncommon among top soloists, but among idol groups? Yeah it is. Since FAKE LOVE’s release, BTS has not had less than 3 title tracks charting top 100 at the same time. Think I’m over-exaggerating? I’m not.

Credit to worldlove27 for the receipts!

Since May 18th, 2018, BTS has had 3+ title tracks charting at the same time, which is now more than 3 years consecutively.

Point #3: This point explains itself. I’ve counted 28 songs that have charted for 75 weeks+ on Gaon, and BTS has 4 of them. The only artist that has tied them is Paul Kim. IU will catch up to them soon with her 2020 song “Eight”. Among the top 10 longest charting songs on Gaon (2016-2020), BTS has 2 in the top 10. No group can touch them longevity-wise.

Can you think of any more ways BTS differentiated themselves from their peers digitally?

  • I think the main aspect that sets them apart is longevity and consistency. And the longevity in digitals is backed up by Gallup.

Their songs dont always have the explosive start viral hits have, but they resonate with people and have more replay value. That keeps them on the charts longer. And its not a one-off thing with them, its consistent. I think it could be because they dont rely on one hook or viral choreo, they rely on music and/or lyrics.

They also have had huge/national hits every year since 2017, I dont think anyone but solo digimons can compete with this.

  • One other thing i find insane is especially in the past year (since dynamite basically) is the ability for their songs to do well in Korea with little to no korean promo.

i mean dynamite's first performance in korea was literally after it had won its first soty :pepe-joy:

SLR is another example of this. (like we got 1 tiktok and 1 tweet of this song and its still chilling in the top 30 of melon).

Melon 24Hits especially has become quite dependent and charting stats there is helped tremendously by korean promo on variety shows and even music shows.

BTS have managed to chart their songs extremely well without this promo which just shows that people are there and ready to check out their music as its released.

  • its been lovely to watch bts grow from 2018 when people said they dont have a hit song to being the biggest 3rd gen digimon and the only 3rd gen bg to actually meet that standard

That "no hit" BS has been on loop since 2015, can't believe it took until BWL for people to shut up.

They've been consistent since 2016, but I agree with the rest.

  • SLR's trajectory is incredible, I can see this song getting like 80 weeks easily.

This is a great point you brought up, as always! They haven't promoted since ON but their last 4 singles still charted well regardless.

Replay value - strongly agree, applies to b-side too

  • They have reached this stage of career where they don't need to promote; the name speaks for itself.

That's what having the biggest fandom in the world does for you. Guarantees you a giant ready made audience. BTS has hit around 400-450k UL in the first 24hours for every title since Melon reform. If the songs get GP approval like Dyna, that number shoots high to 700k UL peak. If the songs dont, that number drops like LGO. Butter is in the middle i guess, unless it skyrocketed recently the last i saw was 540k UL.

Are we really going to have the GP vs Fandom debate again? :boredr:

This is the secret that antis should know. The more people put down and say that BTS don’t have something, the more BTS and ARMY will work hard to get them.

That’s why I love it when people downplay BTS. Karma is an ARMY is real ;-)

  • Are we really going to have the GP vs Fandom debate again? :boredr:

I dont think its a debate lol. The consistency is remarkable, i think it's clear that BTS has about 400-450k UL that are hardcore or casual fans that will listen to their titles the day they release. If they dont like it and GP doesnt buy in, the song will eventually drop and underperform like LGO. If the song blows up into the GP, the song will get 700k UL, IU numbers. If it's in between, you end up with Butter.

Remember that the real GP arent tuning in to when BTS debuts. They're regular Joes with regular jobs, boomers, gen Xers, even grammies and grandpas. When they buy in, the song booms higher like what Dyna, LSG, and now Next Level have done.

You were doing okay with your argument until you reached the last sentence. :sweatr:

I rooted for you only to end up disappointed :pepe-back-away:
