What's the point of comparing groups/songs from different generations?

It seems to be a reoccurring experience around the forum. I see threads where people compare established groups with rookies, or songs from completely different eras and the result is always some sort of fanwar or idol/group bashing. And before you ask, no, not all of them are troll threads.

But like, what is the point?

This should be the main goal of every fan. That's why I don't understand why some of us (I was guilty of this too when I got into K-Pop) feel the need to drag other groups/songs/fandoms down.

Is it some sort of self validation and self gratification we desperately need?
