Like the reason Day6 songs are so good isn't just because of the lyrics or the melodies, but the vocals as well
One of the things that I want to highlight, that I love is how they can transition from chest voice to head voice/falsetto so effortlessly and smoothly. You don't actually see kpop groups do this that much nowadays, most songs are sung in chest voice and high notes are also in chest voice, because whenever people try to transit from chest to head voice/falsetto, they are often prone to crack and have a high tendency to mess up live (that is if they even sing live in the first place)
Take there latest comeback as an example. The chorus at 1:04 by Wonpil and 1:24 by Young K, it's SO EFFORTLESS AND SMOOTH. Like if they sung that entire line in chest voice it probably wouldn't sound as good, but Day6 always experiment with different techniques. And Wonpil part at 3:12min, at how he transit from a falsetto, to a high chest voice belt, back to falsetto with some Mariah Carey like runs like WHO EVEN DOES THAT?
It's not just this comeback, but their previous songs showed that as well. Listen to 1:24min and 3:16min mark Jae's vocal transition and 2:30min for Wonpil. It gives the song as extra flavor because it's sung differently from how Young K sang it in the first verse
And now I present to you, the song that really shows it all. The chorus part at 0:54 and 1:05 by Young K, 2min and 2:11min mark by Jae, and 2:50min and 2:59min mark by Wonpil. And I might be wrong about this but when they sang the falsetto part it seems to be like 1 key higher?
Compare to Dreamcatcher's cover, which they did amazing by the way. But you see how different it is sung and they dodge the falsetto parts that I mentioned
It is easy to sing songs in falsetto, like if the entire verse is in falsetto, but to have such beautiful vocal transitions like that, it isn't that easy to control and a lot of times you might crack because of how abrupt it might be.
I feel that idol groups nowadays seem afraid to explore their vocal capabilities, they are afraid that the song might be too hard to sing for them?
What do you guys think?
