Solo Songs in Group Albums

  • BTS have done it in most of their albums, starting as intros (O, Rul82?, D&W, HYYH trilogy), and then full-on solo songs for each member (Wings, Love Yourself: Answer (2 of which were intros from the previous 2 installments in the trilogy) and Map of the Soul:7)

Was this like an actual thing before? are they other groups that do this? :/:/:/

  • Yes this has been a thing since 2000 with 1tym's 2nd Round and Big Mama's Debut, as well as many of Fin.k.L's albums. It is fairly common when the group wants to stay together and an member makes a song that does not fit the whole group, and they are not ready to disband or do solo activities so they just include the solo in the album.

  • Yeah, but i didn't like it when they'd put solo songs on group albums, i'm particularly thinking of 2ne1's case idk about other groups, but for them some members got to shine on the album with their solos while others didn't have that so i always thought they should be separate things. But maybe for some groups it works

  • I guess many groups have done solo songs for one or two members before but BTS are the first one to give everyone a solo song on an album with 'WINGS' (someone on akp itself said so, a non-ARMY). That's why they say WINGS was a game changer for not only BTS but also k-pop. The things that happened after that are unprecedented and unheard of in k-pop.

    Dude. Right above you too.

  • Not solo but subunit, gfriend did in their last album with each subunit has 2 members each. And each member contributed in production of their unit song

  • I dont know about kpop, but jpop idol groups have been doing this since mid 2000s at least.

Its is simply sensible. You need solos to give some resting breaks for members during concerts. And since you already have the solos for concerts, you may as well record them and put them on albums.

  • These's solo tracks were VIBEY!

Solo album tracks that were memorabe enough for me to remember are:
