It's mostly luck and landing with the right company. a group is secure if they're in a big 4 company. Other than that it's a lot of luck and maintaining a fanbase. A group can be very talented like Lightsum, but none of it matters if they don't have luck and quality marketing. Perception is everything and if kpop fans can sense low budget or not marketed as a big group. Then, it's going to be very hard to gain a following because the group is perceived as below the competition.
In lightsum case, I wouldn't even say their music is bad. They have some good songs in their discography, but they missed the key ingredients of luck and marketing. The group was never marketed to be a big deal or Cube never took chances to improve the perception of the group. It's actually kind of shocking they didn't use I-dle to help create hype for the group. There's very limited interaction and surprised they didn't use Idle for clout.

selecting good songs is part of luck. Because good is subjective, we can't know whether the song is good or bad for most people.
Overall it's like 60% luck + 30% pr + 10% other
That's not really true, because it's pretty easy to do research about this actually. That's why producers making similar Movies, TV Shows and Music as well. That's why you can see so many Chart obsessed people. All these stats helps producers t o decide what trend they should follow, so it's not really about luck, it's more about follwing trends.
Also, 90% of Idol groups and soloists selecting a song is not even about them, they don't have any credits, so what's happening after the release isn't really their achievement if you think about it.

This!
But I'm not sure if it's true these days, because most companies want to hire rich kids, so the luck is almost 100% out of the equation.

50 percent luck which means getting a viral moment at the right time.
25 percent having an It Girl in the group.
25 percent is what the group/label do when they have either of the two things above. Are they able to capitalize on luck or exploit the It Girl's popularity to drive the entire group up the charts?

Rarely do you get a group like Idle for example who didn't have the machine pushing them and was able to exceed and sustain popularity. There's always something that happens when a group goes viral which makes them go back to where they started.
I think if it's rich kids getting hired, then they most likely end up in a company where they will most likely succeed. I doubt a rich kid that has influence will be in a nugu that will most likely fail. I can only see a foreign idol being in that situation but even then I doubt they will end up in some nugu with no hope. The rich kids with influence most likely land in a big 4 company or a company just below them.
I think it's simple, you need to have luck mixed with pre-hype from survival shows, and land in a good company. In Lightsum case, they were just short with Chowon getting screwed over. I believe she got rigged out of joining iz*one, and if she made the cut then her current group situation would be much different.

I don't if some people do it. But on youtube, you can translate comments to an extension. It is far from perfect but it can help to give a rough idea on what is saying. Having some basics of the language helps too though. https://19216811.cam/https://1921681001.id/
