We always talk about who the next Blackpink or SNSD is but do you think we will ever get another IU?

  • I’m not too familiar with soloist (and I mean soloist from debut) but it feels like IU is really a once in a life time idol!

Has there been or will there be any soloist (not from a group) that will IU’s level :?:

The only one who was on the same level with IU is BoA or more like IU is on the same level with BoA.

We might get someone again after 10-20 years.😅

To be honest, I don't think anyone can or will come close to these two, because they're really on another level, and even if there will be another massive soloists (even if it's a group member) it's a different era.

I think we can say that BoA and IU are both became big without social media and streaming. I mean, when neither was as big as it is now. I don't think Idols in general can maintain their popularity these days for long, because it's a different audience, everyone want to follow the latest trends and that's the main part of being popular. With BoA and IU it was never the case.

  • That’s very true I completely forgot BoA, but as you pointed out she was before IU’s time! We are in 5th gen kpop and it feels like there are no big soloist (of course I might just be ignorant as I don’t follow soloist).

The famous Soloist nowadays come from groups so it’s not quite the same or fair to compare to IU/BoA :/

I know groups have always had a higher success rate than soloist in kpop. It just feels like IU will be the last big soloist from debut

  • IU in some ways a one of a kind because she is so good acting too. But for her singing career it was a viral song and a viral moment (Good Day and the 3 octave high-note part) that completely changed her trajectory. Before that she was kinda middling with some pretty annoying songs like Marshmellow.

If I had to pick a soloist I think could do it with the same viral song and moment it would be Gyubin. She has the talent and the looks (she looks like a young Han So Hee), she just needs that viral spark.

  • IU is an anomaly and it's like what Bottles said that it's hard to get somebody that is a top actor and soloist. I thought Sejeong had potential but I don't think she's going to release music frequently enough to get that recognition. Her last album was fantastic but I see her focusing on acting more.

I think there's also the issue that soloist don't get much recognition unless they came from an idol group. I can't think of a female soloist without an idol background that had a long successful career. What usually happens there's usually a steep decline and it's hard to maintain popularity.

I think the reason above is why nobody says a soloist is the next IU because many will think of an person that can balance both acting and music. It's very rare for somebody to juggle both and be considered top tier in both. Also, we can't forget all of the brand deals and star power. IU checks all of the boxes for the perfect entertainer, which is why I don't think we see people label somebody the next IU

Since 2nd gen there's no big FEMALE soloists in Kpop. The only one is Taeyeon, but even she's not on the same level with BoA and IU, but she's the closest, and she's also 2nd gen.

Male soloists are basically GDragon and that Lim Young-woong guy. I call him the new Thanos.😅

There are popular soloists obviously from groups, but neither of them are remotely close to the women above or the guys.

To be fair, Kpop soloists (even group members) are basically destined to *"fail" in this industry, because it's all about the latest groups.

*fail: In Charts, not in general. Also, longevity wise.

BTW, IU weren't big since debut, I follow her since debut (2008) basically, and a lot of people hated her till the early 2010s. The funny thing is, both BoA and IU saved their companies from bankruptcy.

IU in some ways a one of a kind because she is so good acting too. But for her singing career it was a viral song and a viral moment (Good Day and the 3 octave part) that completely changed her trajectory

Not "3 octave" just 3 high notes. 3 octaves is a wide range with multiple notes.

Gyubin is a good pick, but I feel like she's another Kassy, LeeHi or Punch in terms of talent and popularity. All of them are popular in SK, but not huge like BoA or IU.

Their style doesn't really suit the young generation imo.

  • hey I really like gyubin too lol
