Would you consider being an IT girl a skill?

If being an it girl/boy was a skill, many idols could be IT now.

So no it’s not a skill

I dont think becoming an IT Girl is a skill per se. That is much more a stroke of luck, a moment in time, a correct push. I daresay we've seen some flash in the pan IT girls or potential IT girls that went nowhere...

I also think maintaining and capitalizing on your IT girl status is where the skill lies. Being able to navigate and deal with your newfound "higher" level of status, knowing what it was exactly that made people get drawn to you in the first place, keeping peoples interest. Personally, I think Jennie is prime example of someone with these skills, she's very much been able to capitlise on, and maintain and broaden, her IT girl status via some savvy moves and "marketing". That does take skill. Wonyoung also probably.

Those flash in the pan or potential IT girls that went nowhere (I wont name names haha)? They couldn't maintain the hold and it slipped away.

Earlier on, it really looked like aespa might have been blessed with two IT Girls, Karina and Witner. There was a heavy push for the Winter is an IT girl thing. But Karina easily eclipsed her, because Karina really does seem to have that saavy and drive more whereas Winter kind of just... fell back. It's not to say she isn't popular or like of course, but her moment in the IT never took of or lasted. In fact, it could be argues these days that Ningning is closer to "the moment".

I also think part of the "skill" comes from more innate personality.

Extrovert vs Introvert.

It's much harder, but not impossible, for natural introverts to be IT girls, because being an IT girl really does need you to constantly be putting yourself out there and exposing and advertising yourself as almost a brand or a product.

That shit comes easier to extroverts

i didnt think even know Winter was being pushed for it girl and you're right about Ningning because she's always going viral

but I can see what you mean. its a similar thing for Kazuha. HYBE never really pushed her as it girl but i think fearnots were really hoping for that even tho Chaewon and Yunjin are more it girl material (specifically Chae).

One of the things I use to recognize it girls are those who are nearly average in terms of talent (overall).

Eunwoo and Wonyoung for example. Neither are known for being exceptional at singing, dancing, or rapping.

On the other hand, they are definitely the ones that bring the biggest interest to the groups from outsiders. So their place in the group is still super important.

Which makes me think that the popularity of groups has been less and less about talent and more about appeal. Eunwoo and Wonyoung bring really unique appeals to their respective groups which is what gives them the it factor.

Hasn't this ALWAYS been the case for kpop and most manufactured pop the world over?

People taht seek naturally talented performers tend NOT to be the people that follow manufactured groups.

it has always been the case but then there's fans who conveniently care about talent only when their faves' "rivals" have a bad moment

the vocal controversies of last year most def brought back the performative sentiments of talent being of utmost importance in relation to a group's popularity and those sentiments seem to have recently overshadowed the reality that appeal matters way more

Depends how good she is at IT. Does she know Python? Java? C++? Any experience in machine learning or large data?

not per se since IT girl status is a title but the elements that make up what an IT girl is could and very well should be

charisma, likeability, charm, influence, personality, marketability, visuals etc etc are all skills that one can have and develop

and as I have said it before those skills are probably more important than the singing and dancing...

It’s definitely both.

You need to be above-average pretty (maybe even more than that), but also have the skill to navigate stylists, choose the best looks, carry yourself elegantly, and maintain that image consistently.

And I’m talking about the real “it girl” factor here.

Right now, the only true it girl is Wonyoung.

Karina and Jennie are more like popular idols, but not quite on the same level of the it girl aura.
