I think a mega hit song meets multiple criteria at once: worldwide recognition, going viral, becoming a cultural phenomenon, having high streaming numbers, being played at various events, and becoming a topic in society,resonating widely with the general public. the criteria can be reduced or expanded, but the main point is that a mega hit simultaneously embodies multiple key qualities.

they're referring to youtube, not youtube music. Almost 5.7B views and still pulling over 1M views daily 13 years after release.

ıdk, to me her song seems pretty well-known worldwide, but I’m not sure if it has as much global fame as Gangnam Style or if it reached that level of cultural phenomenon.
Well, the boring answer is.. .it's a combination.
But in general I would say a good sign of a mega hit is how often a song is mention and talked about, played at parties etc. and especially outside the normal kpop bubble. I mean, Gangnam Style was talk about on tv, newspapers etc. all over the world. Especially when it comes to older songs from 2nd generation when streaming was not a big thing yet you maybe need to look at other things like that.

Most of the streaming services were either regional or nonexistent in 2012. Spotify was just starting to dip its toes into the international market then. Therefore, comparing streams for a 2012 song and a 2024 song isn't a good comparison.
Ok 3 with baby shark. Shape of you uptown funk and waka Waka never had the reach of Despacito or Gangnam style. Hell outside of football people barely remember Waka Waka, waving flag is the one that remembered more
