    2. No (3) 33%

If you've been into kpop for a long time, I think it becomes fairly obvious which groups will make it big or not within a few months of their debut, and sometimes not even that long. For example, I fell in love with YOUNG POSSE straight away with Macaroni Cheese, but it was clear their goofy fun, hip-hop, wasn't going to let them hit it big, despite being from DSP, a once industry giant.

But it's not just the more comedic groups, every gen you have your Laboum's or your Lovelyz or your Wooah's that just meander along without picking up too much steam - (maybe Lovelyz are a tier above Laboum and Wooah - in perhaps the B tier (below S and A tiers) reaching similar heights to say Fromis_9 of the current gen.)

But then of course, you have the groups that surprise and buck the trend. G-Friend became a top girl group in early 3rd gen, despite not having any top tier visuals, just by having great songs, a fresh charm, and a video of them slipping on stage in the rain.

One group I have been obsessing with recently is Ifeye. They are from a nugu-company from the looks of it (Hi-hat Entertainment), but the group has (to my eyes at least) absolutely insane visuals, a pretty dope debut song, and a potential viral moment with Kasia's hair tie-back. So I am finding it hard to gauge if they are going to blow up or not, I feel like they should - but maybe that's just the hopeful fan in me.

    What do you all think?

So, what do you think? Do Ifeye have what it takes to make it big? :thinkerpepe:

  • I don't know who they are and I don't know their company

in kpop the company you debut with matters a lot (and also whether one is from a survival show although that factor is waning in recent times)

those factors are much better predictors of "success" than individual talents and skills

does that mean every group who comes from the big4 or a survival show will hit it big - of course not just as it also doesn't mean that every non-big4 or non survival show group won't hit it big

it just means they will have a harder time to "prove themselves"

  • Indeed, the company of course matters and that's why they will have their work cut out for them as they'll need to build a fanbase from the ground up.

I've just been comparing MV views and they are doing pretty good on that front pulling in a respectable 10M views in a month which is very good compared with other newer groups. Kiikii - I Do Me is at 12M after being out for 2 months, Hearts2Hearts - The Chase 18M after 2 months, Rescene - Glow Up 11M after 3 months, so I think they will land somewhere in the middle of that (below Hearts2Hearts, higher than Kiikii).

Do we know if those views are comparable between groups though? That is, might some be "ad" (non-organic) views?

    how are their sales like?

    what of K-charting?

    what of spotify numbers?

    IG numbers? twitter numbers?

do they (or their members) have any cfs yet?

I ask those questions not to denigrate ifeye or try to put you on the spot but to see how those numbers compare to their peers

  • I’ve got no idea lol. I’m not used to backing up my opinions on Kpop with any sort of numbers or facts, I just go with my gut feeling instead (which I am sure is annoying lol). If anyone else can interject on those metrics, I am all ears.

that's cool I can respect that

I'm like the same with my fav groups as well except most of my favs are "successful" groups lol

  • I hope they will! Maybe not as big as groups from top 3/top 4, but hopefully they'll gain more popularity with each comeback.

I know visuals matter a lot on Korea and for a lot of kpop fans, and they are all beautiful, plus it was quite easy for me to learn to tell them apart which is always good.

The songs they released are really my cup of tea and I think they might appeal to the wider audience. They also said that the first mini album is the beginning of the bigger planed concept, so maybe this will catch people's attention.

And for a debut they are good performers and two of the members have nice vocals imo. From what I've seen online Kasia and Sasha might be the most popular members, I do agree that the opening with Kasia is unique and fun.

I rarely pay attention to the numbers, so I don't know any stats for them but I wish them luck and will be following their releases. 😊

  • From what I read, one of the company founders is Ryu.D who seems to be a well know choreographer, and the company producer is LEEZ, who is one of the main producers for Dreamcatcher. I didn't know any of that, it's only what I read on reddit, but it makes me think that hopefully the company founders know the industry enough to focus on the right things and have proper promotions for ifeye.

They will of course have a harder time, like all groups from small or unknown companies, but it's good that someone in the company at least knows the industry well.

And speaking of their company, another interesting fact I found online is that supposedly their artists don't have any trainee/debut debt as the company decided to pay all the expenses on their own and allow the artists to debut without the added stress. It has nothing to do with your post, but just an interesting fact I found while reading about Hi-Hat entertainment and ifeye. :-)

    interesting

in regards to the trainee debt - can you clarify whether the debt is non-existent aka forgiven or whether the artist just doesn't have to pay it if/when they leave

since I've read somewhere that there is two competing directions certain kpop companies have taken

    1. no trainee debt whatsoever (what classifies as trainee debt is undecided - ranging from just the classes to food and accommodation - transport, styling, etc etc)

    2. no trainee debt upon leaving/withdrawal from group but the funds spent on a trainee is still acknowledged and slowly backpaid from the artists earnings (so like not true no trainee debt)

  • I don't know that many details unfortunately. I remember I read about it in an article from so0mpi but I can't find it now. However, I was able to find a reddit post and that's what it says:

RYUD, co-founder of Hi-Hat Entertainment, revealed that the company will be responsible for all of the trainees’ training expenses so that there is no burden on the trainees or parents and trainees feel wanted at the company.

  • I'm bumping this because A. I'm salty I don't get the first ifeye thread here, B. This is some very interesting background lore on the group and their company, and C. It's time to promote ifeye and get the word out
