Why did Jennie get better critical reception than Lisa?

  • Jennie's album in general got better critical reception than Lisa's album. Be it Pitchfork, AOTY, RYM and even the general public consensus seem to favour Jennie's album. Why?

Why ? Is it hard to admit that it's just good

Anyway, Different strokes for different folks..

Honestly, there’s barely any skips on Jennie’s RUBY for me. I like 12 out of 15 songs, and that almost never happens.

It’s my fav album at the moment and one of the best albums by a female act this year

  • I personnally think that the whole aesthetic for "ruby" was better planned than "alter ego"

alter ego had a lot of potential but it wasn't exploited enough

second of all i think Ruby had a lot more diversity than alter ego in the sound used in every tracks

just looking at the "title track" of the album you can already have a hint at how wide is the different sound used in RUBY, Zen, love hangover, ExtraL, and Like jennie sound completely different from each other but still felt kinda cohesive with each other

which is something i think Lisa messed up in her album, it lack of cohesiveness and some songs sound way too similar to each other imo

but that's not a problem i think she know that this album isn't cohesive and she completely assume it i remember reading her billboard interview and her saying that she was in studio and there was a lot of song she liked and wanted to put in her album and when thinking of how to include them she thought about the concept of alter ego

while in contrary i think in Jennie case there was a bit more depth in the research of the concept of the album

and lastly, what Lisa album atroucisly miss is something more personal, the song in the album are great but all of them have this same message and the other song even if they talk about love etc... aren't personal neither

which is something Jennie successfully did imo in mixing hype song like "ExtraL" and "Like Jennie" but still adding in the tracklist songs that are personal to her like "Twins"

If i had to use only one word to describe each of their album

i would say "Ruby" is the album of an artist

while "Alter ego" is the album of a popstar

  • What's there to wonder??? Ruby is a well made album and esp. suits the western audience... Jennie should surely get her flowers for her album... she did great...

Lisa's album is in between the west and kpop... its more like Blackpink's THE ALBUM which is more of collections of title tracks and very few B sides... Alter EGO as a concept is a really great concept to promote such type of an album but instead of giving the concept a great launch they put bare minimum effort on it... if they had put in more marketing and work into concept and promotion the album would have more reach because Lisa really brought in great songs...

Keeping critics aside, a lot of people never wanted get past her alter ego concepts and actually give her album a fair try... she has really good songs and esp blinks, considering they like BP music, and then act like they don't understand alter ego is just baffling to me...

Lisa's vision and the strength of ALTER EGO finally came to fruition with Coachella... you can finally see the potential and the fact that Alter Ego is a performance and stage album... People want to write it off as "Lisa just put in whatever songs she got" this is just shows u don't know Lisa, don't want to know Lisa and will surely not accept her experimenting... Alter Ego and all of Lisa stages have such high production and planning...

Lisa was very clear that she wants to experiment and want to try out everything to know what suits her... Considering she was mainly rapping with BP this was a new arena for her and Lisa is a performer, she will play to her strengths and she also went after her weaknesses and brought is so much of new ... if anyone should have understood this, it should have been so called blinks, not general public or critiques. A lot of people including Blinks hopped on the hate train just to get a kick... the fandom is so divided, no one is an OT4 hence easy to hop on such hate trains... with Coachella you can see what Lisa was aiming at...

I for one am glad all 4 members came out with different styles of albums

  • I think Lisa’s album conceptually is more suited for an idol loving audience than appealing beyond it. Hence the difference in reception.

For example alter ego and promotion around it will look a bit silly to anyone not exposed to the idol world. This is true for kpop “concepts” in general where ppl outside kpop will indeed find it silly.

This doesn’t make it bad though. Concepts make kpop more interesting than the west for many of us here.

  • I think this is why Blackpink is so great as a group.

Every member especially Rose, Lisa, Jennie are all-rounders with top-tier specific qualities.

Jennie has special quality in singing and rapping in unique and powerful style.

Lisa has special quality in dancing and stage presence for the concert and performance.

Album wise, it is not surprised that Jennie has better reception.

Performance wise, it is not surprised that Lisa has better reception.
